Any WKW fans around here? what do you think about his future? has he reached his peak? will he ever do something as good as 2046 or In the mood without Doyle… or they will come together again in the future maybe? I don’t know if feel optimistic or not about it.

I’m not as huge on him as others in here, but i think he is a little ‘directionless’ right now. Blueberry Nights was mediocre imo, and his new film looks like it could have been made by almost anyone.

I swear anytime I think of Chungking Express or In the Mood for Love I have this huge smile on my face. Not the same for My Blueberry Nights :)

I like blueberry nights but doesn’t have the magic than other wkw films, maybe i feel this way because it’s very conventional in the background and also in the form, maybe it was not only the lack of an excellent cinematography the reason for this?
Haven’t seen his new work The Grandmasters but i don’t really feel very attracted to it.
I think he should come up with new ideas in the same line than the love-trilogy filming in the country he knows.

I’m not really sure about The Grandmasters (which I can’t believe hasn’t been mentioned yet) being good but we’ll see.

Also Fallen Angels and Ashes Of Time, but I didn’t care for 2046.

Maybe he’s in a creative rut?

It’s (understandable) difficult for directors to do a film in a language other than that of which s/he is a native speaker. And using pop singers as lead actresses generally doesn’t seem to work as well in the US as it does in HK and Japan. I thought Blueberry Nights came out pretty well, considering.
