The 1942 re-release is just the original with narration from Charlie Chaplin, and is about fifteen minutes shorter. It’s sort of the reverse of a director’s cut.
I’d recommend the original.

And the real sad part of the DVD is that the 1925 superior original WITHOUT Chaplin’s narration is merely a “special feature”
I loved the original gold rush myself, the same as I dislikke it a film is dubbed (voice over) I don’t enjoy it when a film is toyed with, much prefer the original and in it’s original format and language.
