The Hero

Would like recommendations for films with an “Uncompromising Hero”. All are welcome.

It’s hard to think of an interesting hero who is entirely uncompromising. There are a number of mind-numbingly tedious heroes that are uncompromising. I guess in mainstream cinema I might start the thinking off with Andy Dufresne (The Shawshank Redemption).

And I’ll continue thinking about non-mainstream…

Jules Winnfield from PulpFiction, uncompromising on his theory of “divine intervention”, the way he argues himself out of the business.
Javier Rodriguez Rodriguez from Traffic uncompromising in his values.

King Vidor did an adaptation of The Fountainhead, something to that effect. Doesn’t have to be a spiderman..or something extreme. Jules Winnfield from PulpFiction would fall into the AntiHero category in my book, but thank you.

Braveheart, any of the Jason Bourne films, Gary Cooper in High Noon, perhaps.

Don’t ask me why this was the first one I thought of, but what about Joan Allen’s character in “The Contender?” Most political movies are FULL of people who compromise, but this was the story of a women who refused to validate the claims made by opposing party members (it was rumored she engaged in orgies and prostitution in college), and instead of telling her side of the story she refused to answer the queries of the press, because she did not want to dignify the lies. For me, she was a bit of an uncompromising hero, as was Jeff Bridges’ characterization of the president (although, in real life, neither performance would be realistic).

A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS.

Perhaps the ultimate answer. Thomas More’s uncompromised position is the whole point of the story. Plus the film is fantastic.

Sometimes it’s staring you right in the face. Nameless in Hero.
