the last great sci-fi action film

floserber

I watched Moon yesterday, it’s a good movie. Minority Report and A.I. are pretty good too, and else 28 days later, A scanner Darkly, Southland Tales and Wall-E… but i didn’t really watch any masterpiece in this style during the past ten years… :/ And i don’t think it will change in the near future… the last very very bad surprise was to discover that Asimov’s foundation will be adapted by R. Emmerich,..

Moon – but not really action
Big Bang Love Juvenile A – though not action … natch

erm…

Minority Report was just OK not great

actually genuinely can’t think of anything

the best sci-fi action films are now videogames (if you see what I mean)

Halo: Comat Evolved
Metal Gear olid
Mass Effect

for starters…..

Oops, I forgot about the recent Star Trek film. That was a good one. Thanks Micky and whoever else brought that up.

@Underground

Have you seen the Firefly series? I think seeing the series (being familar with the characters) would make Serenity more enjoyable.

Re: Moon

I enjoyed that film, but I don’t think it qualifies as sci-fi action.

Sunshine is a sci-fi action, huh? I’ll definitely make more of an effort to see it.

the Cahiers critics, and directors Shinji Aoyama and Kiyoshi Kurosawa all had War of the Worlds in their top ten of the decade. Surprised no one has mentioned it so far while Minority Report ( much inferior to WOTW in my opinion ) has been mentioned several times.

Children of Men had enough action to qualify, but I personally never really loved the film. I think the devastation of the inability to reproduce didn’t hit me on a viceral level. Yes, the end of the human race is a big deal, but it didn’t impact me on an emotional level for some reason.

I thought the beginning of WotW was pretty thrilling, but the movie went downhill from there. All the sentimental family themes and feel good resolutions turned me off.

Were there any great non-American sci-fi action films in the past twenty years?

I think truly good science fiction usually makes for a lousy action film because good science fiction is about speculation and ideas.
2001 is good science fiction.
2001 is anything but a good action film.

Sunshine (I actually thought the 3rd part was brilliant and totally threw me for a loop)
Star Trek
The Matrix

Gattaca and Moon aren’t action movies but are still very good sci-fi movies.

Kael, in the book afterglow, had a real fondness for Galaxy Quest and (tho I tend to dislike scifi) it was for me a lot better than I would have thought

Mark

The Matrix (the 2nd and 3rd were horrible)
Serenity
Sunshine
Star Trek
Silent Running (an oldie but goodie!!)

starship troopers 1997
the matrix 1999
minority report 2002
star trek 2009

these seem 2 be the real contenders since 1991 and none come remotely close 2 the excellence of

Really? You prefer T2 over The Matrix, huh? I think I prefer the recent Star Trek over T2 (but I’m not a big fan of the latter; loved the “liquid” terminator, though).

The Thing isnt really 100% scifi, but its a great older movie (80s) that had a stellar story, cast and thrills. just got it on blu, i highly recommend it if you’re looking for a classic with NO F’NG CGI.

when did movies from the 80s become “older”?

Man, growing up sucks.

Terminator 2 and Minority Report are cool. But nothing beat the idea of The Matrix.

Matt Watkins

Funny thing about the “idea of The Matrix”, very similar themes were explored (arguably better) in eXistenZ (1999), The Thirteenth Floor (1999) and Dark City (1998).

The Matrix, Inception, yes the Terminators and Aliens. Children of Men too. Can’t forget Robocop either!

The Matrix, for me, is as good as it gets.
