The longest movie you've ever sat through

If we’re talking start-to-finish without a break, it’s Kobayashi’s THE HUMAN CONDITION (not only the longest, but also the single greatest film I’ve ever seen). Truth be told I only watched parts 1 and 2 back-to-back (7hrs), and saved part 3 for the next day (even though it meant yet another Philly-to-NY trip on the Chinatown bus!). Second place is Leone’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (229min).

If we’re talking non sequential viewing; SIBERIADE (260min), PHANTOM INDIA (363min), FANNY and ALEXANDER (312min), BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (yeesh! 15hrs!) and ‘Ken Burn’s THE WAR’ (shnikies! another 15hrs!!)

Based on the fact that Janus Films has brand spankin’ new 35mm prints of THE HUMAN CONDITION circulating, which I was fortunate enough to see at NY Film Forum this summer, I’d say we’d have about another year, year and a half to wait… but be sure, it is coming! I’d trade in my entire collection for that film (only half kidding), especially considering the kind of royal treatment that i expect Criterion will lend it. I’ve never been so unremittingly enraptured by a filmic experience in my life. And at just over 10hrs, that’s quite a feat of keeping ones attention.

I’d love to see Rivette’s Out 1, but as of now the longest film I’ve seen is Kieslowski’s Dekalog, magnificent. Although, soon it will be Berlin Alexanderplatz once I get through it this holiday season.

i adored the french made for television “the count of montecristo” with gerard depardieu in the lead role. six hours went flying by. “Decalogue” was most rewarding. “the best of youth” was very watchable.

I just watched La Belle Noiseuse yesterday. I’m going to watch 1900 this Wednesday, and I saw Seven Samurai earlier this week (my library was showing it). Weird how things work out, huh?

The longest I’ve seen is Satantango (with three bathroom breaks), but it will be The Decalogue in a few weeks.

The longest I sat through in one session, was Lav Diaz’ “Evolution of a Filippino Family” at about 11 hours. Lav Diaz presented the film himself, and said it’s ok to leave the screening and return whenever one wishes, but aside a ten minute break after six hours, I only left the film for 2 or 3 very short toilet breaks.
Intense…

It seems there are two DVD releases of Bondarchuk’s War and Peace, a 2003 2.35:1 release on 5 discs at 403 minutes and a 2007 1.33:1 (pan and scan) on 3 discs at 427 minutes. Why would you cut down and pan and scan an epic like this? So if you want to see the full Russian cut (427 min) in the original aspect ratio, you can’t. Does anyone own either of these releases and have any comments about the quality?

A three film marathon (With none particularly relating to the other) let’s see, Batman Begins to start off the night, From Dust Till Dawn to get a Tarantino fix, and Natural Born Killers to overdose on Tarantino. Thank god is over, what, oh my god their coming back, ahhhh…
