Well, having now seen Three Godless Years which I thought was good (many thanks for the subs Nolimanaig – they work just fine), my votes are as follows:
The White Ribbon +2
Aliens -1
Klute -1
Face of Another +2
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles -1
Fargo -1
D
Barry Lyndon +2
Stagecoach -1
Yi Yi -1
@Steve
“Showgirls -1 (really people?)”
The only thing more pretentious than disliking Showgirls is… wait, there is nothing more pretentious.
Come on, disliking Showgirls has nothing to do with pretentiousness and everything to do with the film being pretty absurd, that is witnessed best the pool sex scene.
+2 Ed Wood
-1 The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
-1 Aliens (Cameron)
“Come on, disliking Showgirls has nothing to do with pretentiousness and everything to do with the film being pretty absurd, that is witnessed best the pool sex scene.”
Which is funny… and therefor entertaining. Which makes it good.
I didn’t say it wasn’t entertaining, but there are definitely numerous films which are more entertaining.
I don’t know… I guess entertaining=good to me. Good=like. Realistically I know other people find different movies to be more entertaining. But I’m annoyed by people taking for granted that Showgirls is a bad film.
A. A Clockwork Orange +2
B. Pulp Fiction -1
C. Fargo -1
^ I agree with KINGOFPAIN, for me entertaining = good (although that’s not the only reason I like ‘Showgirls’). I understand there are a lot of reasons not to like the film but I would like to ask the haters this, why should the over the topness of Nomi during the pool scene be attributed to Elizabeth Berkley’s bad acting? Is it possible it’s just in her character to be excessive?
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie +2
Sex and Lucia -1
Dancer in the Dark -1
+2 Khrustalyov, My Car!
-1 Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

“why should the over the topness of Nomi during the pool scene be attributed to Elizabeth Berkley’s bad acting? Is it possible it’s just in her character to be excessive?”
Eleni, if she was out to break a penis and have such awkward sex that a porn star would tell her to tone it down, fine, and I feel has much as it was poor acting, it was poor directing, and let me state that I like some of Verhoeven’s work. Showgirls is not without its moments.
Hard Boiled +2
The Quiet Man -1
Magnolia -1
Somebody needs to save Distant Voices, Still Lives. I would do it but some fools keep voting against Showgirls and Hard Boiled. ;)
+2 — Histoire(s) du cinéma (Jean-Luc Godard)
La Jetee +2
Brief Encounter -1
Hiroshima mon amour -1
D
+2 Yearning (Naruse)
-1 Exotica
-1 Eureka
Ha. Polaris, no, I’m okay with your solution, which frankly I think is inventive and necessarily tactful.
The back catalog in Philippine cinema doesn’t necessarily consist of one film, though, not even of recent films. Like this one:
+2 El Filibusterismo
-1 Jackie Brown (his best work, but I have no problem voting it down)
-1 Dancer in the Dark (not I feel Von Trier’s best, and definitely have no problem voting against it).
And so it goes…
“Somebody needs to save Distant Voices, Still Lives. I would do it but some fools keep voting against Showgirls and Hard Boiled.”
It’s even worse Jon….some people are STILL trying to throw down Jeanne Dielman and preserve….Pulp Fiction!!!
Dun Dun Dun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Travelling Players +2
Network -1
Heat (Mann) -1
