The OFFICIAL Cinema DVD/Blu-ray Deal Thread

kndy

Having maintained deals on the Criterion and Kino threads, I’m going to start using this thread to plug other cinema sales and hope others can contribute as well.

The focus will be on Blu-ray and DVD as a priority but if there are hardware sales for those wanting to jump to Blu-ray, please contribute as well.

================
Ordering from another country

For those living in another country, here is a Universal Currency Converter

For those in the US purchasing from Amazon UK:

For those in the US purchasing from Amazon UK, there is no VAT charge and what you see priced is much cheaper after you add it to your cart and make a purchase. For example, a DVD priced at £7.99 will end up costing £6.80 instead.

Canadians purchasing from other countries
Canadians on various forums have said they have been paying for custom charges when purchasing from USA or UK stores. Please keep this in mind.

DVD REGIONS:
For the most part, for Americans purchasing from Amazon UK, the DVD will more than likely be PAL, Region 2. All region players can be purchased at Target or Wal-Mart (like a Phillips DVD player that has DIVX capability) for $34.99-$69.99. It’s important to look for the models up on a site like this first. Then if listed, find out how to make your player All Region. Just a few presses on a remote will enable your DVD player in becoming an all region DVD player.

BLU-RAYS
More and more Blu-rays from Europe are becoming region free. Please visit Blu-ray.com and you will see if the Blu-ray you want to buy is all-region or not.

It is important to note that although the film may be all-region, the special features and menus MAY NOT be all-region and thus not play on your player.

So far, I have tested Masters of Cinema all-region Blu-rays and they have worked on various types of Blu-rays. I have tested other companies like Showbox or Tartan Video and although the films are all-region, sometimes the special features are not.

Granted, it comes down to your Blu-ray player at times if they can play PAL-related titles or not.

================

AMAZON
Criterion sales have happened after the November sale. Although not all of DVD titles are offered, you often will see the Blu-rays on sale.

As for other titles, I highly recommend using camelcamelcamel for Amazon purchases.

BARNES & NOBLE
Barnes and Noble have their Criterion sale in July and November, although it is not known if this will continue in 2011. Also, due to the membership card changes, there is a benefit if you are a member and buy in-store, otherwise not much anymore if you only purchase online. If you are an online purchaser, it is recommended to use the third-party B&N stores such as AAA, Visa, Library, etc.

To keep up to date on coupons or third party B&N stores, please visit this thread

BIG LOTS
Many cinema classics can be found at Big Lot stores lately. Of course, stores have varied of what titles can be found but lately, Jean-Luc Godard, Borzage sets have been found to titles from Hsiao-hsien Hou, Pedro Almodóvar and more. Also, cinema books can be found as well. The good thing about Big Lots is most DVD’s go for $3 (new releases are $5-6) and sets can be found from $3-$6. Purchases are made in-store.

DEEP DISCOUNT
Deep Discount is known for having two Criterion sales during the year at 45% off and a KINO video sale in March at 55% off and the B1G1 free on Labor Day (same as Sony Pictures Classics titles). Studio Canal sales once a year as well. Keep your eyes on this thread for any DD cinema sales.

EUREKA!/MASTERS of CINEMA
If you join their newsletter, you can receive great deals on the titles. Join the newsletter here

WARNER ARCHIVE
As Warner is moving towards DVD on demand, a lot of their classics are being burned on DVD-R via their Warner Video Archive. Occasionally, they will have a buy 5 for $50 or buy 10 for $100 sale. Please check this site for any significant sales or other titles on this thread.

If you haven’t taken advantage of this yet, KINO and Sony Pictures Classics titles are part of this Deep Discount Labor Day Buy 1, Get 1 free Blu-ray sale which ends on September 7th. This is a steal because you are paying around $22-$24 and essential getting both titles anywhere between $9-$12 each and shipping is FREE.

As of right now, most of the titles MAY be sold out. But that is fine since most of these Blu-rays are new and wait-time is anywhere between 2-3 weeks. So, it’s definitely worth it since KINO and SPC titles RARELY go on sale.

ENTER THIS CODE AT CHECKOUT: LABORBD

Anyone in the Bay Area go to livingsocial.com. Pay $15 for a $30 voucher to Amoeba. You can get up to 3, so $45 for $90. Not sure if it’ll work in the LA location.

For Keaton fans, the Lost Keaton is a great deal since that set is new. The Gaumont set is also on sale. Again, probably a lot of these are sold out but worth purchasing and you should get them 2-3 weeks later.

For classic fans:

Both Warner Brothers Classic Holiday Collections are $15.99 right now on Amazon.com. These are usually $24.99-$29.99 and typically hit under $17.99 on Black Friday but surprisingly it’s $15.99 right now.

Warner Brothers Classic Holiday Collection, Vol. 1 (Boys Town / A Christmas Carol / Christmas in Connecticut / The Singing Nun)

Warner Brothers Classic Holiday Collection, Vol. 2 (All Mine to Give / Holiday Affair / It Happened on 5th Avenue / Blossoms in the Dust)

For those who are looking forward to Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” from Criterion, I just want to plug Richard Patterson’s Chaplin documentary “The Gentleman Tramp”. He is the only documentarian that Chaplin gave access to his home, to use footage from his home movies, his past films, etc.

Mr. Patterson is releasing the 78-minute documentary from its original master on DVD for $10 but he’s only producing 800 limited edition copies and that is all. It’s not Blu-ray but this is probably the only time you are going to get a chance to get this. Previously it was on VHS only and 25 16mm prints. Go to Amazon and search for “Gentleman Tramp” and you will see it for $10.

For early classic fans, the once very, very expensive Laurel & Hardy 21-Disc Set has dropped in price on Amazon UK (for just today…I don’t know).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001K2KE8/ref=ox_ya_os_product

Not sure if it’s for today or what…but the price is now:

£26.24 (note: On the site it says 31 but when you check out, the VAT is dropped and becomes 26). Total for me and I live in California is: £29.32

It comes to around $46 (US) but I have been waiting for this to go under $60 and this is the cheapest I have seen it since. That’s pretty good for 21 DVD’s (and I just bought the Abbot & Costello set which was $56).

=====
Note: With a lot of cinema DVD’s going cheap especially on Amazon UK with the BFI, Artificial Eye, Studio Canal prices quite low, I’ve been asked what is the cheapest all-region player. For those living in the US, you have three choices (As of Oct. 2010):

WAL-MART:

Philips DVP3982 1080p HDMI DVD Player (Factory Refurbished) $28.54

How to make it All Region

Philips DVP3560/F7 – $39.00

How to Make it All Region

TARGET:

Philips 1080p HDMI DVD Player with Up-Conversion – DVP3980 – $54.99

How to Make It All Region

I know there are a lot of people who haven’t made the jump to Blu-ray but Disney is offering one hell of a deal right now. If you own five Disney titles (of the 20 eligible titles offered) and have not used your Disney Reward Points (these come inside a DVD or Blu-ray purchase), you can enter five codes and then get a Disney Blu-ray player for $59.99 (and it’s a very good Blu-ray player too!!!) This deal ends in January. So, take advantage of it if you have five Disney DVD’s or Blu-rays with points you have never redeemed.

Forbidden Hollywood sets are on sale…not sure why just v2 and v3 but they are 66% off at $16.99 (usually $41).

For those wondering what these sets are…included are pre-code Hollywood films shot between 1930-1934 that featured sexual innuendo, references to homosexuality, miscegenation, illegal drug use, infidelity, abortion, and profane language.

UPDATE:

FOR CANADIANS: It’s important to note that a Region Free Hackable Blu-ray player has been released at Wal-Mart for $49.00 (Via Black Friday Deals, 3-day deal starts today). So, for those in CANADA who want to play Region B discs, this is your chance.

So, no more worrying about if you can play MoC, Artificial Eye and other region discs…

To make the player region-free, it just takes the following button presses

- I am not sure if this player will be available in the US…we’ll see! Hopefully we will see this today at U.S. stores but this would be great since if it’s a region free Blu-ray player, you can play also region-free DVD’s.
