I have to vouch for the great deals that can be found at MovieStop. Other than B&N, they seem to be the only store I have ever seen to have an entire section devoted to Criterion. You can get single-disc releases new for $19.99 and two-disc ones for $29.99. That’s not ridiculously cheap, but considering how expensive they are at places like Best Buy or B&N (w/o a membership), it’s not too bad. They also sell used copies very cheap. Today I picked up a used copy of “L’Avventura” for $15. The other problem with them is that there aren’t that many. They’re mostly exclusive to the East Coast.
Other than that, I really hope that B&N has another 50% off sale and soon. I gotta get the Rossilini War Trilogy…
Amazon has had the 400 Blows and The Seventh Seal Blu-ray for $20.49 US. for a while now. Both amazing deals.
I don’t really have anything to add to this thread, Im just posting so I can keep track of it easily. :)
Good thinking Josh!
I’m posting for the same reason.
you all probably do this already, but ebay can be a great place to pick up criterion’s too, especially if you’re patient. I’ve got titles like The Third Man and Le Doulos for $15. I got the Seven Samurai re-release for $10, Ikiru for like $12. If you’re patient you can usually get the title you’re looking for pretty cheap.
I’m also hoping for the B&N sale soon…need to finish my Melville collection with Le Cercle Rouge…
I’m always weary of eBay, especially when it comes to digipacks like Seven Samurai or Breathless, because if the case is damaged in any way it will annoy me as long as it lasts on my shelf. If they post pics of the actual item I’ll consider it, but otherwise I just stick to the amarays.
^ Josh, I would also check out the seller’s ratings. I never buy from the seller unless they have high ratings from previous buyers
Even with high ratings I’m still weary. When I bought my ultimate edition of Dawn of the Dead off of eBay the seller had 100%, but it’s the most battered digipack I’ve ever seen. Now, if it’s something I really need to own or it’s absurdly cheap, I might take a chance. But otherwise, I’ll buy in person or from trusted sellers like amazon or deepdiscount.
Josh – I have gotten one or two Criterion’s that had minimal damage to the case. Maybe a dent or two, but no tears or rips. For the most part, mine have all been in excellent condition. The seller’s have to disclose the condition of the disc and the case and if it’s not in the condition they promised you can probably get your money back. Some of the ones I’ve gotten were brand new. I know people are weary of eBay, but I’ve gotten a bunch over hte past 6 months and they’ve all been in great condition.
I’m not trying to persuade you, I’m just giving my experience.
My experience with ebay is good as well, but patience is needed. I average10-12 bucks per film on ebay and about 25-35 on box sets.
Hah, I actually just bid on Seven Samurai, one of the ones I specifically said I wouldn’t. It wasnt that I was convinced or anything, it was just so cheap I couldn’t resist. Kind of ironic though.
just trackin. :P nothing to add as of yet.

Has there been any word on whether or not Barnes and Noble will be having their buy 2 get one free and or their 50% off sale any time soon? I seem to remember it coming in July of last year.
On Blu-ray.com, there is talk about the B2G1 sale coming on June 8th. We’ll see…
Yeah I talked to someone working at B & N, The B2G1 sale is coming next week…..he had not heard anything about the 50% off though. But he did take my name down…..he said he would call me as soon as he knows….I will post the date on here if i hear anything :)
As I remember from last year, the B2G1 sale was right before the 50% off sale started in June. Does anyone else remember it that way?
Ya I think I remember it that way as well. Im going resist buying any until the 50% sale comes up….otherwise it really is not worth it.
…‘deepdiscount.com’…
…is having what they call a Summer Sale with an additional 25% off their already slightly discounted prices. Many, but not all, films are discounted including a number of Criterions. The discounted items are selling for apx 39% off Criterion’s regular listed price.
The big perk here is for Yanks who usually buy on-line. The website says there are no shipping or handling fees for you lucky buggers. I’m a lowly Canuck, so I’ll have to wait for another sale.
The sale continues ’till June 20th.
The buy 2 get 1 free deal starts today at Barnes and Noble. Using online deals, plus member discount, plus 2 for 1 you can get some pretty nice deals.
How long does that deepdiscount sale last?
…‘deepdiscount.com’…
Concludes on Sunday June 20th, as noted above.
nothing to add just want to watch
nothing to add just want to watch

Saw on one forum – BN Criterion 50% off Sale – July 20, 2010
YES!
Savvy
I was a B&N employee for most of the last year and I can tell you that they don’t give us much warning as to when the sales start. There also isn’t an established schedule which they follow as to when the sale takes place. It is possible that if the sale is happening in the next month or so that the individual stores have been made aware of it but I doubt anything much outside of that.
KNDY,
Do you know how long the BN 50% off sale will last?
kndy
I figure instead of reposting many Criterion deals from various stores, try to keep things all within one thread. If anyone finds any Criterion deals, please post!

Hollywood Video closing deal (ends whenever your store closes)
For those who want to take advantage of Hollywood Video’s store closing, visit your local Hollywood Video and check out their Foreign Film section. Different stores may have different percentages but if your store is still around, they can be anywhere between 20-50% or off for a title.
Granted, these are used…but there may be some out of print titles at your local rental store. For example, I just went to one right now and found Fellini’s “and the Ship Sails On” and “Autumn Sonata” for $7 and despite being over a decade old, they were still in good condition. You should also spot a lot of Kino Video titles here as well and get them cheap.
