Tron, I got the same emails today. I think some of them are on backorder, as only a couple of the movies from my order are shipping.
I received my stuff pretty quickly, so I’m stoked. But when you order, you want to make sure those items that are 1-2 weeks delivery or pre-orders are not included, or else your whole shipment can be delayed.
Btw, non-Criterion but somewhat related…Bergman MGM 6-DVD set is on sale for $12.99:
http://www.oldies.com/product-view/73956M.html?identity=F75E72223600856070474E716
This is a great price for that set!
I had to pick up that Bergman set. So cheap it doesn’t make sense.
apparently that set is cropped all over the place…or else i would buy
LEECHES: For $12.99…for something that’s usually $35-$45, it was too good to pass up though..;
I just read somewhere else mgm actually fixed everything in the set…..does anyone know?
LEECHES: I guess we will find out…
Btw…for those of you who may have Hollywood Videos next to you…you may want to check this weekend as many of the last remaining stores are closing up this weekend and next and score some Criterion, Kinos, Sony Pictures Classics titles from the foreign section at HV for .99 (90% off).
I ordered the set, too. Thanks for posting the link KNDY. I have my fingers crossed about the aspect ratios, but for around $15, I would take the set either way.
the HV by me are closed :( :(
I paid 4X as much for that MGM Bergman set! I love three of the films. There’s only one dud in the bunch (starring Grasshopper) and the doc is good. The cropping, if it exists, doesn’t bother me so I’m thinking whatever the story it’s not significant. DVD Beaver mentions 11.5% cropping on Persona. I’d rather that weren’t the case, but I wouldn’t have noticed if Tooze hadn’t told me. The picture quality is quite good and my enjoyment of the movie is affected very little by this issue.
I have to say I’m disappointed the penis wasn’t cropped out entirely. I felt like that girl in Fight Club; yes, I started crying like a little girl.
One of today’s Amazon golden box deals is Days of Heaven CC on blu-ray. Too bad I don’t have a player. I don’t know how much the sale will be. It might end up being the same or more than the current half off B & N sale, but I thought I’d mention it anyway.
Thanks Ben…it shows that it starts in seven minutes…so, hopefully it’s a pretty good price. I didn’t order it from the sale since it said 1-2 weeks and didn’t want my shipment to be delayed. But hopefully Amazon has it cheaper than B&N!
UPDATE: Ahh…It was “Wings of Desire” Blu-ray for $19.99.
The new gold box deal is Wings of Desire for $19.99, pretty much the same price as B and N right now.

ahhh, dammit! I already have Wings of Desire on bluray! Oh well, it’s the same price as B&N so it’s not like I’m missing out on a deal or anything
Oh, man. So I’ve kind of lost my shit with this 50%-off sale. Starting off, I ordered Monterey Pop, The 400 Blows, The Wages of Fear, and Ivan’s Childhood from the B&N website (and The Man Who Fell to Earth from Amazon a couple of days prior to the sale).
Then, yesterday I decided to see if any local stores had a Blu-ray copy of the Brakhage anthology. When I went to pick it up, I left the store with The Battle of Algiers, A Woman Is a Woman, The Red Balloon, The Discreet Charm…, and The Last Metro (and Brakhage) in my bag. My wife was….a bit surprised when I got home :P.
Oh well, this gives me something to watch while I wait for the Blu version of The Thin Red Line.
So far I finally picked up Breathless, Le Samourai and For All Mankind. I plan on getting Seven Samurai, Onibaba, Vivre Sa Vie, and Band of Outsiders. And I’m thinking about Stories of Floating Weeds, The Hit, Vampyr, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Human Condition, and Make Way For Tomorrow.
Apologies about the Days of Heaven thing. The only thing it gave away was that the release was a “heavenly” Criterion blu. Obviously I chose the wrong horse.
Out of these films which four should i get? Knife in the water, wings of desire, stagecoach, down by the law, masculin/feminin, brazil, army of shadows? Its so tuff when i’m able to afford only four dvds.
Lucas,
Of those, I’ve only seen Wings of Desire and Stagecoach. I strongly recommend Wings of Desire. It’s one of those films everyone should see (preferably the Blu-ray version). If you’re into westerns then get Stagecoach too, but if you only have a passing interest in them, then I’m not sure I’d recommend buying it.
I’ve only heard good things about Brazil over the years, so it might be worth a blind buy.
@JOSH: Those are all solid titles…“The Human Condition” and Vampyr" being the most pricey of the four. The Friends of Eddie Coyle, if I recall was on sale from Amazon (right after last year’s B&N sale) for $13.99 or so. “Make Way for Tomorrow” is a very good film. But you can’t go wrong.
@BEN D – No biggie. It happens but thanks for letting us know about the Lightning Deal!
@LUCAS: Wow….Well, I like all the titles but “Brazil”, I figure will come out on Blu but you can find the limited Blue box version online…I scored it for $15 and I’ve seen a few times afterward sell lower online. “Masculin/Feminin” I love, but again..these are all solid titles. It depends what you are in the mood for…
@KNDY & JAH, thanks Ill be picking up wings of desire, down by low online along with solaris.
Today I get my paycheck and ill cash out 35 dollars and hit up the barnes and noble next to my bank and maybe buy brazil and videodrome, idk yet.
No problem, definitely worth getting the film while it’s cheap.
Speaking about cheap…the new Blu-ray release of White Ribbon is on sale at Deep Discount for $19.58….it just came out, so it’s usually around the mid-30’s…:

@Lucas, it kind of depends on your tastes but for me, I would pick:
1.) Masculin/feminin
2.) Knife in the water
3.) army of shadows
4.) Brazil
I haven’t seen Wings of Desire yet, although I have the bluray sitting at my house.
Well I cashed my check yesterday for 170 dollars, I ended up buying a membership to save money and bought Fear and Loathing which I havent seen in years, brazil, and down by law.
My next purchase will be Wings of Desire, and maybe videodrome? is it anygood? I’ve only seen DC’s crash which I thought was good despite the taboo of things.
Along with wings of desire, should I get any of these films?
I’am curious yellow/blue
Videodrome
Masculin/feminin
The Last Metro
Playtime
I can only pick one
or should buy any of these after the sale?
should I just get videodrome and wait for the others during the christmas sale? I might buy the black orpheus along with hausu in october but thats it.
I mean the those other films arnt going anywhere right?
I’am curious yellow/blue
Videodrome
Masculin/feminin
The Last Metro
Those are all really great movies! What are you ultimately in the mood for? If I had to pick one, I would choose either between Videodrome or Masculin/Feminin depending on the mood. If you want a kind of dark, weird horror film with great makeup effects, then Videodrome. If you’re in the mood for an amazing French New Wave film that is much more relatable and explores the youth generation & young love, then Masculin/Feminin.
And I’m not sure if you have a bluray player or not but, if you do in fact have one, I would wait on Videodrome because they already have plans to release that one on bluray later on this year.
Are there any cupons out there at the moment?
@Berjjuuann…only members coupons (in-store). For online, 10% if you order from the third party stores like Library or AAA (if you have an AAA card). Boeing, Visa, etc. for like 5-7%.
KNDY,
I have a membership and I’m getting my DVDs in-store so I could use those cupons. Do you have a link to the cupon(s)?
Thanks!
Hey everyone,
The Bergman set that was (and probably still is) on sale for $12.99 at oldies.com is the corrected version. Just received mine today.
Berjjuan – Just saw your message, did you end up finding the coupon? Well, for those intending to take advantage of these membership coupons for the final two days, here you go:

Tron
well despite getting “delayed” this morning, it looks like theyve now shipped…odd. i used the library link and got amarcord and army of shadows for 17.99 each…$39 with tax and free shipping. not too shabby but i wish i didnt wait on the coupons, could have knocked a few more bucks off. oh well.
