try The Haunting directed by robert wise in 1963, but beware of the remake
“The Spiral Staircase” isn’t as good as the aforementioned films, but still well worth checking out.
The British horror movie “The Innocents” from the 1960s by Jack Clayton, and “Thundercrack”, a very campy, sexually explicit riff on “The Old Dark House” from 1975.
I absolutely love “The Old Dark House”. . . “have a potato” . . .I would recommend; “Dead of Night” 1945(british), “The Spiral Staircase” 1946, “The Innocents” with Deborah Kerr, “White Zombie” with Bela Lugosi 1932, the original “Night of the Living Dead”, the original “Village of the Damned” and anything produced by Val Lewton, “I Walked with a Zombie”, “The Body Snatcher”, “Cat People” “The Seventh Victim”, and of course the originals “Frankenstein”, “Dracula”, “Wolfman”, and “The Mummy”. I would also check out Fritz Lang’s “M” German. Oh, and thanks for “The Cat and the Canary”, I haven’t seen that one. I’ll try and netflix that.
excellent recommendations this far. I’ve seen a great deal of them but look forward to the others. was just reading about thundercrack and it sounds like a riot.
soybean, is “dead of night” available on DVD?
“The Ghoul” staring Karloff is a decent imitation of a universal monster movie.
Hey Cole, yes, I picked it up somewhere ( I think I purchased it from Movies Unlimited online ) from some company called The Congress Video Group. Great movie, good luck!
Just checked that information. I did buy it from www.moviesunlimited.com. They have it listed for just under 13 dollars. Sorry, no extras on this one.
Cole, “Thundercrack” is hard as hell to find. But It’s on Ebay or from Chainsaw Video in Holland, who specialise in cult and horror movies. It’s not the full version, but there’s enough to be going on with. I think it’s region 0

Dear Cole:
If you like “The Cat and the Canary,” you would probably like Crane Wilbur’s “The Bat” (1959) starring Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead. A hybrid genre of horror and comedy. You may also dig Roger Corman’s “A Bucket of Blood” (1959).
“A Bucket Of Blood” is such a great movie! I really like the whole beatnik scene in it.
Dear Campbell:
Being a fan of Psychotronic Films, I had heard of “A Bucket of Blood.” Unfortunately, I hadn’t seen it until I found a copy for sale in a Wal-mart bin! I think I paid around $1.50 for it, and I watch it regularly! If you, or anyone else out there, is into comedy/horror films, I just finished watching “Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla” (1952). This is probably the “cheesiest” film I’ve ever sat through . . . and I will probably treasure it forever!
Great film! One of the best horror-comedies of all time. “A Bucket of Blood” is pretty great, too.
I already put this on another thread, but I’ll include it here as well – Just a note to all horror/psychotronic fans out there: the Criterion has added Brian De Palma’s “Sisters!” I hope they include De Palma’s “The Phantom of the Paradise” and “Carrie!”
for fans of this sort of thing, i just saw that kino is releasing murnau’s “the haunted castle” in march.
I saw this a few weeks ago on TCM i loved it too. It is a shame that films this simple and effective can not get made today.
robert, that’s the god’s honest truth.
Dear Cole:
“The Haunted Castle?” Sounds awesome! I’ll keep my eyes open for it! Thanks for the “heads up!”
>> is “dead of night” available on DVD?<<
From Anchor Bay, doubled with QUEEN OF SPADES.
>>If you like “The Cat and the Canary,” you would probably like Crane Wilbur’s “The Bat” (1959) starring Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead.<<
If you like Paul Leni’s CAT, then I’d recommend Roland West’s silent 1925 version of THE BAT and his 1931 talkie remake. They’re a lot closer in tone to the silent CAT and Whale’s HOUSE than the Crane Wilbur remake.
Dear Harry:
Wow! I had no idea that “The Bat” was a remake. I’ll check out both versions. Thanks!
To All:
I just finished watching “The Honeymoon Killers!” I had heard of this film, but never got a chance to watch it. If you have time, and dig low-budget horror films like I do, I strongly recommend it!
This film has a Kino release, am I correct? Has anyone seen it and if so is the quality good? It’s been so long since I’ve seen this, strange to think one of the best Universal Horrors doesn’t involve science or superstition of some kind. ;)

I am a huge fan of james whale’s “the old dark house”. the atmosphere, cast, and wicked humor are all top notch. “the cat and the canary” is also a favorite. do you learned folks have recommendations in this vein to pass along? thanks for any input.
p.s. the remakes of these two are abominable.
