The Search for GOD?

SOYBEAN

Exactly, Blue. One is not any more rational than the other. So, now you can go edit your earlier post.

Fraser-Orr

Drew: Most religions share the same perspective. The “man in the sky” perception is held mostly by children, but as they grow the concept of God becomes more complex.

Oh and if you’re searching for God, how about some Tarkovsky?

Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev is a masterpiece

Drew, why again does believing in God make life easier? I dont understand what you mean by that

Mike Spence

He does exist, Blue

So Soybean, you don’t deny the existence of centaurs?

Drew Gregory

Fraser, But I don’t believe in any customs of organized religion.

I’d call myself religious, however the majority of people who are religious would disagree.

And my point was that I do find comfort in creating “the man in the sky” perception sometimes, even when I know its not what I truly believe. I usually go to Greek Gods though… curse whichever one is bothering me at the moment… sorry Aphrodite… :D

Sekzee, Its nice to have someone to swear at.

God could be a centaur for all I know. Do you deny the existence of an idea? If not, then define it for me and tell me where it comes from. What does it look like? What are it’s physical properties?

For who knows what is good for a man in life, during the few and meaningless days he passes through like a shadow? Who can tell him what will happen under the sun after he is gone?

I love Ecclesiastes

“So Soybean, you don’t deny the existence of centaurs?”

1) No otherwise intelligent person claims that centaurs exist
2) Currently on this Earth, Centaurs can be proven to not exist
3) Believing Centaurs exist won’t help you in any way
4) God isn’t defined as a thing like a centaur or a teapot. It’s about getting to a deeper level of consciousness. As is art, which is why there’s often a spiritual nature to the best artworks.

Oh…but swearing at God doesnt exactly pinpoint the essential lifestyle of a religious person. I cannot relate to that but yes that does seem like an easy way to deal with an emotional situation.

Matt Parks

-So Soybean, you don’t deny the existence of centaurs?-

So, Blue, are you denying the existence of anything you haven’t personally observed? The world is full of currently un-directly-observables.

Fraser, don’t even bother. Soybean’s whole logic is that if something can be thought of, then it’s just as logical to assume that it exists as it does not. Even if there is absolutely no evidence for it.

I’m not gonna lie to you guys.
I thoroughly enjoy watching the atheists here get all agitated and dogmatic.
It’s almost like they are espousing some kind of…dogma.
Somebody keep this going. Please.

Back to OP, a couple of my favorite films tangentially address the so-called search
for God: Woody Allen’s STARDUST MEMORIES and LOVE AND DEATH.

SOYBEAN

Blue, you may want to read Fraser’s post a little closer.

Berjuan

“The world is full of currently un-directly-observables.”

And there are like 30 billion dimensions sitting on top of ours.

I know what he said. You may want to re-examine your logic.

Law

Hmm, I don’t think anyone’s being agitated. Personally, I’m sitting here with a cup of tea and listening to soothing Andrew Bird.

Y’all play nice.

I don’t discount the possibility that there could be some entity out there, but that is completely different from saying that atheists and theists both have legitimate logical claim.

Yeah, I’m very agitated myself, as can be evidenced by my Butt Burglar analogy.

SOYBEAN

I’ve now re-examined my logic and it remains the same. If you re-read all of my posts, Blue, you’ll find that I haven’t once argued for the existence of God, but only against the complete denial of the possibility of one.

Yes, and you’ve also argued for the possibility of the existence of a centaur.

Fraser-Orr

Religious outlooks are subjective, but we’ve ALL been agitated by Butt Burglars.

@ Matt Parks, well, I haven’t directly observed any tooth fairies. But I’ll bet my testicles that they don’t exist.

Drew Gregory

Sekzee, Its all in good fun. Its not that I actually believe it, but sometimes I will admit, despite me writing it off as a joke, it is comforting to feel like when all else fails I can blame someone else. Pretty much human nature.

Its not how I actually deal with my emotional problems though. :P

In a cosmological sense, 2001 and Contact are the search for something, maybe God, or not, or some other meaning or existence beyond our own.

everytime i divulge in a religious debate I become more and more irrked by the lack of consistancy in conversation. Nothing has been accomplished tonight, unfortunately…

I see this is a hot thread tonight.

I’ve been building a centaur in my basement for the past seven years. It’s almost complete. He eats butt burglars.
