The Secret of Area 51 Revealed?

OK, so I recently listened to this interview of the author, Annie Jacobsen, of her new book on Area 51. (Fresh Air Interview with Annie Jacobsen), and I was left feeling a incredulous, but a little creeped out, too. For those of you old enough, you might remember those pseudo-documentaries on Big Foot, the Bermuda Triangle, crop circles, etc. Those films always left me with a creepy feeling and the feeling I had while listening to the interview left me with the same feeling (maybe moreso because Fresh Air is not really tabloid journalism—not this type anyway).

Before I continue, a caveat. I’m speaking off of memory, so I might get some details wrong. If you’re really interested in the book, you can listen to the interview or search the web.

Before I go into the big revelation, a few words about the author and her key source. Jacobsen is contributing editor at the Los Angeles Times Magazine. I believe she writes about foreign policy issues. I say this because her credibility is highly important. (I’m not sure if these bona fides makes her very credible or not, but they sound good.) Her one key source regarding the most sensational aspect of her book, according to Jacobsen, is highly credible. Terry Gross, the interviewer, asks her why she puts so much faith in what he said. Jacobsen spoke about his credentials; the fact that he had nothing to gain and everything to lose; and that she worked with him for about two years. I wasn’t entirely convinced by what she said, but whatever.

In a nutshell, here’s the big revelation:

There was a disc-like flying craft that crashed in Roswell, New Mexico (1951?). The remains were taken to Area 51 in Nevada. The key source was one of the few people who worked on the craft—to reverse engineer it. The source and others supposedly believe the Horton brothers, German engineers, built the craft (They supposedly built and designed other planes), which had hovering capability. Now, within the craft, they found two child sized pilots who were…genetically or surgically modified to look like aliens. The source and others believed that this was a Soviet plot to create panic, similar to the War of the Worlds radio program. Wait, it gets wilder. The reason the US gov’t didn’t reveal this is because they began working on a similar project.

It’s really too much for me to swallow, but, like I said, coming from Fresh Air, it felt a little creepy. Again, I don’t think Fresh Air or NPR respresent the best journalism, per se, but this is beyond what they usually would do.

I saw this on the Daily Show… it’s funny the extent which the military will go to let those of us who choose continue to believe we’re #1 in the universe. Frankly, aliens from space is a given, based on any scientific speculation you care to name, the universe is so vast it’s inevitable, and the very last minute way the ‘real’ story goes from the discarded weather balloon with atomic bomb radiation victim Japanese pilot prisoners, which is the old version of this story, is updated to this far-fetched Stalin and Mengele variation, shows the military wants us to be aware on one level or another, we’re being ridiculous in our refusal to accept the truth: everything we know is wrong!! Firesign Theater!

German engineers built it for the Russians, and put crazy mutated russian midgets in it! I think the things Jacobsen talks about actually make more sense than anything else I have ever heard about Area 51. She isn’t your everyday run of the mill alien nut, she is credible. That doesn’t mean I believe her fully, but she makes logical claims.

@Jardun

That doesn’t mean I believe her fully, but she makes logical claims.

I don’t know. Aren’t most of her claims based on this one source? So, for me, the credibility of the position sort of comes down to her ability to assess the credibility of this one source.

Not most of her claims, no. Simply her most bold. I actually want to read the book, she has plenty of other stuff she talks about that just isn’t getting media attention.

The other claims seem more plausible, and, fwiw, most of the interview covers this stuff.

It’s an old story, told many times. There was one man who insisted to his death that he was one of the first to find the saucer and when he wanted to report it, he got told in no uncertain terms not to do so.

One also said he had recovered a piece of the covering material on the ship and it was highly unusual in that you could crunch it up into a tiny ball yet when you let go, it opened back up into a seamless smooth piece. Supposedly it got taken away by the military.

No real verification on any of this, but certainly a story that has never completely died.

If you want to explore, you can stay at the Little A’le’Inn (get it?) in Rachel, NV. It’s near the Groom Lake land where “51” is. Haven’t been there, but why not, one of these days……

And remember, “Use of Deadly Force is Authorized” if you cross over onto the Gov’s land ;-)

Area 51 is the place the Americans take foreign human tech for reverse enginnering. That is all.
More red gremlins than little green men.
BTW- Ask any over 50 UFO buff (who read books about the subject before 1980) about Roswell abd they will tell you how it became a folk tale only during the 80s. That and Majestik are the biggest tall tales in the ufology field ever.

Is her source Erich von Däniken?
