The Tree of Life gets Cannes Palme D'Or

Endy

Personally I don’t give a flying fuck in witch country some flick was made, I’m cautious about The Tree of Life because I’m not sure what Malick is going to say this time. With the voice over narration The New World created a horrible world for me, some rubbish semi-Stakhanovite and Rousseau wet dream going on there. I like his visual language but those suburb scenes in The Tree of Life trailer made me cautious.

The tree of life isn’t out in USA ?
And to those who didn’t like Love Exposure. Give Sion Sono another try witth “guilty of romance”. It’s a masterpiece. Review coming soon.

I’ve always been excited about Cannes for a few years and this one was no exception. I need to look for more reviews of the films in the areas outside the Competition, but there were plenty already for me to anticipate and I hope they get UK releases – ‘Drive’, ‘Michael’, new films by Kim Ki-duk and Sion Sono, and a lot more. And of course there was the return to filmmaking by Lynne Ramsey with ‘We Need To Talk About Kevin’, which was far more of an event for me than Terrence Malik’s new film.

I hope “michael” gets released as well…It was written and told that there is no plan to release it in the furutre…And Since the move didn’t get anything. It would be such a terrible thing if it’s not getting in the cinema…It diserverd much more attention.

Does Vegas offer lines on Cannes predictions? i would’ve bet both my testicles with absolutely confidence the Malick film would’ve gotten this. YAWN.

No but in Monte Carlo you can do lines of coke with all the directors and find out who’s the best by wasting all the money at poker table

What I would’ve love to see :

PALME D’OR – Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Nuri Bilge Ceylan
GRAND PRIX – Le Havre, Aki Kaurismaki
SPECIAL JURY PRIZE – Hanezu, Naomi Kawase
PRIX D’INTERPRETATION FEMININE – Tilda Swinton, We Need to Talk About Kevin
PRIX D’INTERPRETATION MASCULINE – Michael Fuit, Michael
PRIX DE LA MISE EN SCENE – Bertrand Bonello, L’Apollonide (House of Tolerance)
Julia Leigh, Sleeping Beauty
PRIX DU SCENARIO – Pater, Alain Cavalier

I don’t think Cannes’ll ever have the guts to award Bertrand Bonello with anything.
If I’m proud of something though, it’s having to see Almodovar getting further and further away from the Palm, the day he wins will be the day I sign up for Al Qaeda and bomb the Croisette as first (and last?) mission.

“Until we all see the movies, could we just entertain the idea that The Tree of Life might be a worthy film? "

Why can’t we entertain with the idea that Ceylan’s or Almodovar’s or that silent surprise The Artist MIGHT be worthy films? Why was the Tree of Life the center of attention even before the festival actually started? Why wasn’t The White Ribbon or 4 Months or Uncle Boonmee? Oh pardon me, they don’t fucking have bankable names in their rosters?

As far as what is and isn’t bankable, that’s an easy answer Patapon:

“and Malick has often relied on popular actors though. If he doesn’t want attention than whats with casting Colin Farrel, Sean Penn, John Cusack, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Richard Gear etc.?”

Gear was nothing in the late 70’s, the “cameos” in Thin Red Line didn’t influence the public’s neglect (geez, who wants to see their E.R. star in just 5 minutes and something on screen???) and The New World was snubbed from the Americans themselves for…ummm..“slowness” reasons?

We have a worldwide superstar and a worldwide “unconventional” star (if I can describe Sean Penn as that), of course it’s going to fare well, who would want to see their Batman in a pro-indigenous motion picture?

Dude, it’s all politics, the fact that Tree of Life is being released this week at my country’s theatres means that the marketeers know what they’re doing… theatreS, not 1 single theatre like it happened with Uncle Boonmee!!!

P.S.: Theron may be hot but she’s no actress….

Dimitris – I think you’re particularly attacking American films in particular. ‘The Skin I Live In’ and ‘The Artist’ are both equally bankable films in their home country, and especially the latter. Michel Haznavicus is the French Judd Appatow, and from what I reckon in his films, he doesn’t have a rinse of artistry in him.
‘The Tree of Life’ might have unjustly preconceived as a winner, but we’re talking about Mallick here, neither Scorsese or Spielberg- maybe it is a decent film after all !? I’m sure it’s extremely superior to any Almodovar or Haznavicus.
I’d agree on Ceylan though, but I do hold a theory that Robert de Niro must have surely dozed off during the projection of ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia’ and Jude Law was probably out back fucking some waitress he met earlier at the cocktail.

^ That’s why I’m referring to all types of films Edwin. I could have changed the Artist and added the newest Dardennes which by the looks of their last films, I doubt they’re as prestiged as critics have made them to be. Whether it’s The Artist or Anatolia, it’s obvious that the carpet for Tree of Life’s accolades has been rolling for a month now and I’m sorry, regardless of quality, aye…regardless if it’s THE BEST MALICK FILM EVAR, I’m sick of such publicity and fan-boy mentality…

“Michel Haznavicus is the French Judd Appatow”

I doubt Apatow would have made a black and white / silent film though…

Well it might be easier to make a decent judgement on all this once y’all have actually seen the films in question… just sayin’…

And… all famous film festivals are going to back well known directors, what is new here? To even get into these festivals you need to have a reputation and connections, isn’t that true?

When I saw that the jury included De Niro, Uma Thurman and Jude Law, I knew before the competition even began that Tree of Life would win the Palme.

Endy

I’d replace that jury with a computer which calculates the winner by how much skin minutes the film has based on the data on mrskin.com

Blech

Look, someone has to do it, people wearing clothes doesn’t help to tell the story in any way.

odilonvert

Only if the only stories you like are told through the medium of porn.

Endy

But in the medium of porn the story always has the same ending, everything ends with sexual intercourse, it’s the best story there is of course but can’t use the same formula in every film, gets boring. What I mean is when you watch something like… let’s take something well known… Psycho… when either of the leading female characters is in the motel room how the hell wearing clothes at the time helps to develop the film?

Yes! I knew it would win. OK, now to actually see the film.

odilonvert

This is a weird conversation, Endy. As I’m a girl, I have nothing against girls wearing clothes during a film.

This is a weird conversation, Endy.

I have to agree, O. Endy, I’m sure there’s a porn version of MUBI that’s discussing this very thing . . .

Damn. I’m always the one who disrupts conversations. (:

odilonvert

@Z — lol! EXACTLY.

Endy

What is weird is that in commercial films 99,99% of the time people wear clothes. Stupid propaganda. Porn? I guess a lot the great Greek sculptors were doing porn too. Guess which ones will be stored and displayed longer, sculptures of naked people or stupid movies with clothed people. Boom!

odilonvert

But Endy, we’re not a nudist society. And neither were the Greeks. And there are a lot of ancient Greek sculptures of clothed people too, very famous and beautiful ones, such as the one below:

Endy

“But Endy, we’re not a nudist society”

So? I’m not talking about documentary style film-making. But if you want real-life authenticity then notice how most directors choose not to show people naked in their homes (or other settings) at certain times when they most likely would be without clothes.

“And there are a lot of ancient Greek sculptures of clothed people too”

Ahh, variety… something which cinema doesn’t have.

odilonvert

I’m laughing out loud. Whether you are not walking around nude in your home as part of your routine is rather a personal choice, is it not? ha ha ha

Scaramouche

Imagine they had made ‘Inception’ with the whole cast naked. Exactly the same film but everyone naked. How weird would that be? Funny too, I reckon.

Endy

I can keep this going on forever baby!

odilonvert

Oh man… I’m sorry, but I like clothes and some people well… they should just keep them on.
