they do a pretty good job. I’ve seen the two Manoel de Oliviera films they released and Aurora. Their quality is quite good. Glad to see that Turin Horse has a release coming up. Patiently awaiting this and the new Ceylan.
Actually, going through their catalogue, I see that I’ve seen quite a few of their releases.
They released The Woman with the Five Elephants which is one of the best films I’ve ever seen. Other releases by Rivette, Sokurov, Denis, Costa, Puiu, Guerin, Kaurismaki…seems like an excellent company all around.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, Cinema Guild generally does a nice job with their releases.
I hope it’ll be region free!
I’m so excited for this!
I was so certain I’d have to get an Artificial Eye release for this. Very glad one of Tarr’s films will get a good region 1 transfer!
Dammit. I want to see this, but It’s one of the very few movies I’m not willing to buy… Who wants to buy it and then lend it to me?? :)
Cinema Guild is great. One of the better small labels (comparable to Strand Releasing) and actually gets these films in theaters (even if it’s just a limited release) – one of my favorite discoveries was Everyone Else, which they released in Los Angeles for a couple weeks two or three years ago. Of course their big one last year was The Interrupters.
Can’t wait! I’m also looking forward to Cinema Guild’s Blu-ray of Once Upon A Time In Anatolia.
I’m right there with you, arsaib. Can’t wait!!
!!!!!!yes.
I do not understand why so many people are so excited about this. The Turin Horse is just an o.k. movie, but nothing more. Really exciting news will be when some studio bring THIS in region A.

It’s cool to get excited about things, you know, why not? Someone could easily say why would anyone be excited for Marketa Lazarova. So, whatever.
I’m psyched. I’ll buy this. Hope the transfer is worthy.
Region 1 Marketa Lazarova? Sweet!
Turin Horse, Once Upon A Time In Anatolia are two of my favorite three 2011 films, so I can’t wait for either.
Forget the Regions! Get yourself a Region Free Blu-ray player…
So many people still crying today for a specific region.
Region free blu ray players are still fairly expensive. It’s only the region free DVD players that are cheap.
@Bezruc Getting a DVD in several regions increases the range of people who can have access to a movie. While I’m willing to dish out a good $160 for a region-free blu-ray player, my friends and family may not. Having a local region copy allows me to easily let them borrow it. It’ll also mean that Tarr’s film will be available in places like Best Buy and able to be rented from Netflix, so that your not-so-cinephilic movie-goers may be introduced to him as well.
Best Buy barely carries CC blu-rays except on their website.
Masterpiece! Ill get it this week.
yea but thats because people have already got it region 2 multi region is the only way to be for any film lover theres just too much missing from region 1 so this well this is great..
The problem is not the region, of course. The question is when this kind of movies (such as Marketa Lazarova (blu only available in Czechoslovakia) Andrei Rublev (blu only available in Russia), just to mention a few examples among many) will be available in the USA ???

And yes, Tommy: you have the right to be excited about anything you want. Why not?
Why are these all region locked? I thought it was only the major Hollywood studios who cared about region coding, so that people couldn’t take advantage of earlier release dates in other parts of the world. I also don’t understand the reluctance to put English subtitles, since I always assumed it was standard practice on any disc to provide subtitles in at least a couple of major international languages like French, English, Spanish…
I thought the Marketa Lazerova Blu was not locked? I own it, purchased it from the Czech Republic, and it looks and sounds absolutely incredible.
Does anyone know if there are any plans for the Werckmeister Harmonies to appear on Blu? And if the Artificial Eye DVD is a better transfer than the Facets?
“I also don’t understand the reluctance to put English subtitles, since I always assumed it was standard practice on any disc to provide subtitles in at least a couple of major international languages like French, English, Spanish…”
Keep in mind that subs are copyrighted, so they will cost more to add them if the copyright holder is willing to grant the rights. Sometimes subs are also left off so as to not tread on the toes of an upcoming (or existing) subbed release of that disc in another country. Obviously if you’re mainly looking to sell the disc domestically “other” subs will be less of an issue – but if you also have your eye on the international market (i.e. with the Cine Tamaris Demy set) then including subs/audio for other countries is paramount.
“Keep in mind that subs are copyrighted, so they will cost more to add them if the copyright holder is willing to grant the rights.”
Um, what?
What subtitles go on what disc is dictated by what territory the disc is for. You’re not going to have Spanish subtitles put on a disc that’s made for Germany. Even if English subtitles exist or even if a company wants to create them, they’re not going to put them on a disc just because. It doesn’t have anything to do with “rights” but everything to do with the territory.
hopefully their releases of Turin Horse and Anatolia are good, apparently the DVDs from other regions that are already out mostly suck ass.
Santino, if that was really the case then we’d never see a set of subs on any disc other than those for the domestic market. By your logic (“You’re not going to have Spanish subtitles put on a disc that’s made for Germany”) French releases should never have English subs (but guess what – some do), and that’s just one example. Of course subtitles for the domestic market are always a priority, but my point was about “other” subs – i.e. those in a language not officially spoken in the territory of the disc’s release. And of course rights are part of it – they are an additional expense, and are not worth investing in if you feel your release has no marketability to overseas customers. To say they have nothing to do with it conveniently forgets that a series of commercial decisions are made for every release, including what audio/subs to include if options are available.

released on July 17th in the U.S through Cinema Guild.
Never heard of Cinema Guild before. Are they any good?
