The Works of David Lynch, Best to Worst

Nice pick on The Grandmother Joriah. From the very little I’ve seen that’s his best work.

Joriah Goad

I think it’s his most creative. I adore the film, it’s too bad he never made any full length films like it, and no, I would not consider Eraserhead one of the attempts, although it is the closest example of his short films.

1. Mulholland Drive
2. The Straight Story
3. The Elephant Man
4. Twin Peaks (the series)
5. Blue Velvet
6. Eraserhead
7. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
8. Wild At Heart
9. Lost Highway
10. Inland Empire

As fitting for such a divisive director, I consider 1-5 brilliant to strong, while 6-10 ranges from interesting mess to completely unwatchable.

Mulholland Drive is great. I must confess to really enjoying Dune as well. It was the first Lynch I saw and as a kid I loved the book. Sometimes when I come home from work the best thing can be dinner and Dune

Out of the ones I’ve seen, and not counting his shorts or Twin Peaks series (As I haven’t finished it quite yet):

1. Eraserhead
2. Inland Empire
3. Mulholland Drive
4. The Elephant Man
5. Blue Velvet

Also begs the question; Am I the only one who thought Inland Empire was brilliant?

Great lists…

Mine are:

Mulholland Drive
Blue Velvet
Lost Highway

the worst:
Dune, ouch…I love Lynch, but his attempt at Hollywood blockbuster isn’t his thing.

everything else is either equally good or I haven’t seen.

I agree. The best: Mulholland Drive. The worst: Dune.

I have only seen Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. I can’t imagine two more contrasting pieces of art by the same creator. Inland Empire was just ugly on every level, with the exception of a scene here and there, while Mulholland Drive was stunningly beautiful. So, which of his other works are more like MD, and farthest from IE? I’d like to check out more, but I’ve been very skeptical.

Blue Velvet
The Elephant Man
The Straight Story
Mulholland Dr.
Twin Peaks (pilot)
Eraserhead
Lost Highway
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
Dune
Wild at Heart
INLAND EMPIRE (Exasperating, and possibly the most unpleasant 3 hrs I’ve ever endured in a movie theatre. He is one of my favourite directors but he really put me to the test with this one. I’ve meant to watch it again but just can’t seem to summon up the nerve to go through the unpleasantness all over again. However, I am heartened by the number of admirerers of IE I find on this site and hope to find out how mistaken I was should I ever get around to watching it again.)

Mulholland Drive
Blue Velvet
Twin Peaks – season 1
Eraserhead
Lost Highway
The Elephant Man
Twin Peaks – season 2 (excepting Ray Wise’s brilliant death scene)
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Inland Empire

AAHHEMMM!

Dune,
Dune,
Dune,
…and Dune
(And maybe a little Eraserhead…)

Isn’t everything else he did a kind of a soap opera, or something? I can never sit through ten minutes of his other movies… Maybe I should see Elephant Man though.

I get the feeling some of the posters here don’t even consider Dune to be a Lynch film!

Elvis Is King

Dune is so totally a Lynch film!

Glemaud

Because Dune sucks.

Elvis Is King

Well, yeah, that too. It’s a David Lynch film that sucks. Like Wild at Heart.
