David Lynch is very hit-and-miss for me. He is extremely visually inventive, has a wicked sense of humor, and his films are almost always great fun to watch with other people, but I’ve never bought into him being a genius, “deep” at all, or even particularly original. Having said that, I think the TWIN PEAKS television series (at least up to the Laura Palmer murder revelation) will always be my favorite thing he was ever involved in. I have a huge soft spot for it, it captures the quirky smalltown Northwest wonderfully.
1. BLUE VELVET- will always be his best, fits his bizarreness within an actual gripping thriller narrative
2. MULHOLLAND DRIVE- the best one at capturing his random narratives and surrealist tendencies, and its genuinely creepy as hell.
3. DUNE- I know its very flawed, but I adore the book, its so much fun to watch, the visuals and sets are really out of this world, and wow- what a great cast! – “For he is the Kwitzatz Haderach!”
That’s about it for the Lynch’s I truly love. I find WILD at HEART and LOST HIGHWAY cool in parts, but also really annoying in others, and overdone in the “weird for weirdness sake” department. I finally caught up with INLAND EMPIRE recently, and it was suitably bizarre and fun, but it seemed just more of the same and Lynch just coasting on his quirky reputation to be very memorable, much less meaningful.
Oh, I haven’t seen Dune (nor do I have any interest) and The Straight Story.
His shorts are okay. Interview Project is touching.

I’m with Roger Ebert on David Lynch. I can’t quite describe why I dislike Blue Velvet so much. I think there’s an unintended and absurd surreal effect in the way the 2 main characters act… I couldn’t see why Laura Dern was so accepting of his stalking behavior, didn’t buy the main characters obsessive interest, thought the portrayal of the way these seedy characters acted was pedestrian and hokey… Lynch’s understanding of the seedy underbelly in these films clearly comes from a man who admits he lived the perfect childhood in a Frank Capra neighborhood and has never really had any contact with these sorts of people.
1. Dune
2. The Elephant Man
3. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
4. Blue Velvet
5. Mulholland Drive
6. Wild At Heart
7. Lost Highway
8. The Straight Story

10. Inland Empire
Yes, Dune is at number 1. Incredible montage, production design, music… the images and sounds from that film left a profound mark on me from my cinema viewing at the age of 10… if only Lynch would go back and refashion a new version utilising the hour of cut footage. One of the handful of sci-fi art movies. The sleeper must awaken.

2. Twin Peaks (Pilot – Episode 16)
3. Lost Highway
