The X-Files

SOYBEAN

Modern day Sherlock Holmes complete with the adorable agent Scully as Dr. Watson. I’m currently watching the entire series one season per week. I thought that it was about time that we had an X-Files thread around here. Any believers out there? I absolutely love this show.

Come on in, Luis.

But yes, Soybean. I loved it and watched it during its original airing but have yet to re-visit the series via DVD… although I did just see that Netflix has added (I think) all the seasons to its instant watch service…so… hold that thought.

I live by Netflix instant watch! I have no cable tv. I’m in season two episode nine and enjoying every one of them!

Any fans of the movie that came out last year? I know nothing of X FILES, but I hated last movie.

SOYBEAN

Yeah, you can’t judge the show from the movies. It was sooooo much better as a television series.

Unfortunately Cris Carter phoned it in for the last film and the first one was also quite weak. The series i must say is masterful, i’m just wrapping up season 7 and it is still good. I also love how each season the show kicks up its unique sense of humor.

I watched it as a kid when it was on tv, and I’ve been watching it on netflix recently too. It’s so great!

Well, I devoured season one and zipped through season two and now I’m starting to get to episodes that I have never seen before and they are fantastic! The last episode of season two and the first episode of season three were pretty intense and I can’t wait to see where this is going to go. Don’t spoil it for me.

I agree L.A., the humor is starting to kick in already. It’s one of the most enjoyable aspects of watching the X-Files. It’s that unusual combination of suspense, creepiness, and humor, along with the relationship between Mulder and Scully that make this show irresistible.

Soybean, you are in for a real treat. The show absolutely hit its’ stride in seasons 4-6. While the mythology shows were often hit or miss the stand alone episodes were often brilliant. I believe you are correct when you state the relationship between Scully and Mulder makes the show irresistible, I often felt just having the two of them in Mulder’s basement office in a prolonged exchange of dialogue would have made a great episode. I really miss this show. But beware season 9, which I refuse to acknowledge that it exists. Have you sampled the new series Fringe?

SOYBEAN

Chris, thanks. No, I don’t have cable tv right now (which is why I have the free time to watch so many X-Files) so I haven’t seen Fringe. If this show actually gets better in seasons 4-6 than I can’t wait to get there. You refuse to acknowledge that season 9 exists? Now you sound a little bit like Scully :D

X-Files is one of my favorites, too, especially seasons three, four, and five. I think that’s when the show was at its paranoid best and the smoking man most threatening. Plus, I was always surprised and delighted with the funnier, lighter episodes. Like the episode in Season 5 called Post-Modern Prometheus that’s filmed in black & white and features some songs by Cher. I won’t way more in case you haven’t seen it, but it’s a wonderful episode. As is the Jose Chung episode, which I had to watch a couple times to really figure it out. When the show was at its peak, it presented challenges to its viewers like few shows do anymore. Ultimately I think the show lasted a season too long (or maybe a couple seasons too long), but even toward the end the show still had some good moments.

Just finishing up season three (one more episode to go).

@Erland, Jose Chung’s ‘From Outer Space’ was awesome! It was like the X-Files doing a parody of the X-Files. Great episode. I’m going to re-watch that one again before moving on to season four.

I thought that I would get tired of watching so many episodes back to back but that hasn’t happened.

Soy, one more X-Files believer here!
Re-watching Season 1 and relishing each moment.
Missed a few episodes from each season during its run time and loving the fill in I am doing now.

Season 4 episode 2 – Home

Umm, ok, that’s . . . that’s, uh, that’s just not right! This episode (for those who have seen it, it’s the one with the three Peacock brothers) is just wrong on so many levels! I saw it on it’s original airing and I still can’t believe what I just saw on re-watching it! I feel like scrubbing my brain with bleach.

Filmy, check it out.

Yeah, eww. That one still makes me feel a little squirmy.

To your earlier point, Jose Chung is one of the most fun hours of TV evarr. The show as a whole is going to kick into gear in Season 4 and deliver some of its strongest episodes.

Excellent. I’m looking forward to it!

Bad Blood
Unruhe
The Field Where I Died
(Top 10 Eps Evarr)
Paper Hearts (Ditto)
Leonard Betts
Memento Mori
Small Potatoes

These are all great, and I’m sure I’ve forgotten some. Eve 6 is another season.

I haven’t seen the show since it’s original air, but yes, there was some great stuff there.

I absolutely adore the x-files I’ve watched the whole thing through like 4 or 5 times, some of my favorite episodes are:

Wetwired
The Erlenmeyer Flask
Anasazi/Blessingway/Paper Clip
F. Emasculata
Our Town
Home
Bad Blood
Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose
War of the Coprophages
The Post-Modern Prometheus
Dreamland
Sunshine Days
How the Ghosts Stole Christmas (Lily Tomlin!)
Jose Chung’s From Outer Space
Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man
The Unnatural
Monday
Unusual Suspects
The Truth

man I could list so many more, just absolutely fucking spectacular series, I do really love all of the comedies in season 6 an awful lot. And like everyone else I don’t enjoy the last 2 seasons very much, the monster of the week episodes were pretty great but the over arching mythology episodes just became to silly, there are some great things in them but the whole super solider thing made no sense to me at all. The new film was utter shit though, I absolutely despised it and reject it’s very existence within the frame work of the series, the first one was perfectly fine though but was just an extended episode rather than a proper ‘film’ I thought, the way it sat between the end and the beginning is awesome though.

My favorite show. I am obsessed with it. I have the entire series boxset which is awesome. My favorite episode is Bad Blood.

I never watched it when it was on. Maybe I should give it a shot. I just hope it’s not as formulaic as I suspect.

I’m a great fan of The X Files, however for me the series ends with the end of Season 5 and the film. I found that the film should’ve been a bowing out point for the show in it’s entirety. For me the inconsistencies and leaving threads unanswered dilated the show too much.

I am also a great admirer of and in many ways think it’s a finer series – Millennium.

Rewatching season 1. Anyone remember Squeeze? Tooms is creepy.

Nice to see “Sunshine Days” get some love.

And Tooms is Doug Hutchison! I like that d00d. He was on LOST too.
