Should not happen. What would Peckinpah say?

Just another cash grab, not a real film. Bloody Sam would be bloody furious that they’re exploiting all the work he put into this.

First of all, its “they’re”. secondly, yes they supposedly are and no it definitely should not be allowed. it will turn out as a stylized thriller similar to every other thriller coming out in the last few years. back then it was innovative and awesome

It’s a free country, let them go for it. It doesn’t matter whether the new one is good or bad, it won’t have any effect on the original.

any development on this?

“Straw Dogs” had Peckingpah working at the very peak of his powers. It is one of the most brilliantly made films ever. The story itself is not new. I don’t think we have to worry about anyone duplicating the impact of the original film.

It’s due to come out in early 2011. Yeah, clearly the strength of Straw Dogs is in its execution (no pun intended) but this is one of the more gratuitous remakes. Rod Lurie seems like the oddest person to remake the film too. Not a very interesting filmmaker but he also specializes in political thrillers but even worse is the casting of James Marsden and Kate Bosworth (bland and blander) as the leads.

The only positive thing I can see about this is that (maybe) a younger audience will discover the original.
Then again, if the remake turns out to be terrible (which, it seems, is a given) it might put off a potential new audience. Let’s hope for the first scenario?

It’s a Free Market, but I can only picture Susan George in the wife role.

Matt Parks

From what I’ve read, Lurie has changed the lead character to a screenwriter who moves from Los Angeles with his wife to the small Lousiana town she grew up in (they’re shooting exteriors in Vivian, LA, to be exact). I’m guessing the L.A. vs LA sensibility clash is where the politcal content comes in. But certainly the relationship of Lurie’s version to Peckinpah’s will be dialectical. Also, I wonder if it’ll end with a hurricane.

“Also, I wonder if it’ll end with a hurricane.”

Good one. I can picture it perfectly. Now the film sounds even worse. Straw Dogs works so well in how it upsets expectations and stereotypes, especially about British civility. Here we have a typical effete liberal blue state coaster versus redstate inbred rednecks.

I heard a long time ago that the re-make is going to have Ed Norton in it, is that still true?

anyways I think it’s terrible idea. You can’t top the original in anyway. Such a brilliant film.

Ari

While Norton would have been an excellent choice (it’s hard to imagine another contemporary actor more perfect for the role), it’s James Marsden instead.

does anyone know where i can see the original without buying it.
i can’t find it on the few torrents i belong to, and netflix doesn’t carry it

gojira

Have you tried your local library? If your branch doesn’t carry it see if they can from some other facility.

Gabriel Picard

@caleb,
the film is on most largest torrent sites.
but it’s worth buying!
of course, the Criterion edition is well worth the money. But a cheaper standard edition is out there!

i swear a few weeks ago when ppl were discussing straw dogs in the most violent thread, the film was not showing up on demonoid or isohunt. but now i see a bunch of options.
