I’ve been waiting for a blu ray to purchase this film. The most poetic war film I’ve ever seen.

Best WWII film? Come and See might have something to say about that.

ugh more Wes Anderson?? Why?

Also with the fact that Tree of Life has been in post production for over a year I don’t think it’s feasible to believe Malick would take the time and effort to organize the rumored 5 hour cut for the new release. :(

I hope the new cut is available, however much of a pipe dream that may be.

Speaking of cuts, not sure how excited I am about an Antichrist blu ray. I saw it months ago but my jury’s still out.

so wait, are these coming out only on blu-ray?

and am i the only one that still doesn’t have a blu-ray player?

JP. Schmidt

They always do both BD and DVD or just DVD, but these will be on both

i’m interested in seeing the movie my sixth grade teacher declared boring next to Saving Private Ryan in a more defined and more “boring” package, only considering it’s better than Saving Private Ryan, which it is.

Very, very exciting!!! I’m so so glad its coming to Criterion. A gorgeous, visually poetic, and emotionally devastating film (and I’m not even that much of a fan of Malick’s other films…), maybe the best WW II film ever- although that’s certainly a big statement, suffice to say its my favorite ever.

I’m sure many are on here are disappointed that its not some “director’s cut”, but I figured that was a pipe dream, and its not something I find desirable anyway, its already a huge, exhausting 3-hour epic film, and just about perfect the way it is. I’m sure they’ll be some interesting stuff in the “out takes” extra, but I imagine its already the film edit that Malick intended, and has no desire to reconfigure it.

PS- Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence is pretty good as I recall as well, I’ll be happy to revisit it. I’ll watch anything with David Bowie…

Wait, does this mean the full cut with Mickey Rorke and Billy Bob Throton will be in it? Have they given off any details about the cut?

Erik79

It’s the theatrical cut. First of all, Malick is busy with THE TREE OF LIFE. A new cut would also be near-impossible, unless someone threw a lot of money into it (all the footage would have to be dragged out again – watched/color corrected, sound design and music would be needed from people who are also busy, etc., etc.)

There are deleted scenes included, though.

Redrum4

that’s a bummer. I would have loved to see this full movie be put together as a whole, and not just the added scenes as supplements.

Erik79

Despite rumors, though, Malick is very happy with the theatrical cut.

Matt Parks

Yeah, we hashed all this out in another thread a while back.

Jazzaloha

@Matt

Remind me of the conversation. I thought Malick expressed a little disappointment or at least a desire to re-edit the film. Did I get that wrong?

Erik Villasenor

Shit yeah
I’m blind buying this as soon as possible

This is good. The audio and video compression for the current dvd of this film is not the best. I consider this film not quite up to par to Malick’s other films but maybe that might have something to due with the mediocre quality of the current way its presented (never seen this in the theatre). Still haven’t taken the plunge into getting a blu-ray player and with now so many great titles finally available on the format the days of watching purely dvds are coming to an end… :(

As far as I can tell, Jazz, most of the stories surrounding recutting the film are apocryphal. If anyone has anything where someone reliable specifically says “Malick wants to the recut the film” please post. There’s a lot of confusion on the details, so what according to the editors of the film a five hour long workprint has somehow become a six hour long director’s cut, etc.

Erik79

@Jazzaloha — He wanted to hone it a bit more and add additional voice-overs, that’s about it.

(Keep in mind that Malick is never 100% happy with his films, hence the years spent in the editing room trying to achieve what his idea(s) for the film is…)

I saw it when it first came out. Gawd, how I hated it! Just despised it. The only reason I didn’t walk out on it was because I kept expecting something would happen. But, that same year I really loved Saving Private Ryan, There’s Something About Mary, and Mulan. Plus, some of the big names that were billed were only on screen for the briefest time and I was really disappointed by it.

Some years ago I decided that I just flat out didn’t get it the first time and wanted to give it a second chance. I’m sure I would appreciate it more for it’s real worth, so I’m really looking forward to the Criterion release. I may not get it right away, but I will eventually. Hell, it’s been this long, I can wait a little longer while until I can acquire it.

Extremely pumped about this. The Thin Red Line has long deserved more than the barebones DVD it currently has.

Jazzaloha

I hope that somewhere in this new version Malick says something about his feelings about this version of the film, specifically if this is the film version (the length, editing, etc.) that he is most satisfied with.

Matt Parks

If we get anything like that, it likely will have to be from someone other than Malick, who isn’t much for sharing his feelings and whatnot. The cinematographer, John Toll, did a commentary for the disc, and there’s an interview with the editors who worked on the film, but nothing from Malick himself.

I think it’s interesting that so many people assume:

1. Malick doesn’t like the cut that was released theatrically
2. the film would be better with whatever unseen footage was “restored” it would make the film better.

The evidence for (1) is at best anecdotal, and regarding (2) my own experience with “director’s cuts,” “extended versions,” etc. is maybe 50/50 good/bad at best, so I’m not so sure.

“(2) my own experience with “director’s cuts,” “extended versions,” etc. is maybe 50/50 good/bad at best, so I’m not so sure.”

I think many films fans are over the whole director’s cut phenomenon after viewing countless disappointments. It was exciting, at first, to see so many get released, but most of them fail to live up the hype. The director’s vision isn’t always better or ‘right’.

As for your point about 1, it also goes against Malick’s way of filming anyway. He likes to shoot as much as possible, but is well aware that when it comes to the crunch, the movie has to be a certain length. Apparently he told Andrew Dominik that his cut of The Assassination Of Jesse James was too long, and it was around 3.5 hours plus.

Matt Parks

. . . and, just to be clear, I think the theatrical cut as it is is a great, great film, so I’d hate to see it replaced by an inferior version.

juan jose namnun

wait a bit more…but best dont wait at all, i d prefer to see: the tree of life" and “terrence malick untitled romance movie” before a new cut of this majestic film.

Erik79

I can assure you that you will, Juan.

Unless Apparition falls apart and the plug is pulled on his Untitled project.
