How about bashing people’s opinion?

^ Lol it depends on how valid the opinion was and how you bash it. If you’re making personal attacks, that’s not exactly smiled upon (although it often goes unmoderated), but short of that, pretty much all opinion-bashing is fair game as long as you’re bashing the ideas, not the person! I actually started a thread on what types of opinion-bashing are okay just the other day! :)

It depends on how you bash. In fact, don’t bash. Be a gentleman (or gentlewoman) and disagree like one. You may not get moderated, but you will lose sympathetic people.

heated debate is fun. no name calling :)

i.e. – you will lose sympathetic people in discussion if you disagree in a “bashing” manner.

That might not matter to you anyway, but since you brought it up…

be nice to everyone and everyone will be nice to you, in theory, if you are nice and they aren’t then you shouldn’t want to be talking to them anyway.

Yep. I enjoy debating things, and nobody here should expect someone to agree with every comment/idea/rating/theory, etc that they post, but straight up bashing doesn’t get you too far.

Joking is good for bonding. Remember that. :)

@Alexandra I’m not a fan of being nice for the sake of being nice. It doesn’t really get you anywhere when discussing film/art. I actually get along better with people that bring it strong…state your opinion like you really believe it and tear apart the opinions of others.

what is “being nice for the sake of being nice”, please. you can certainly strongly state and defend your opinions without being an asshole about it, that’s all.

Yeah, I don’t think being nice and strongly stating your opinion and challenging the opinions of others are mutually exclusive. Hang out with me and you’ll see that. ;)

Also tearing things apart is not a good style of debating if you want any women in the room, Mogambo. That’s the way it was when I first got here. It could get pretty damn aggressive.

Yeah I don’t mind debate, even heated — I just don’t like assholery.

That means being cutting and rude to someone. Or outright insulting them.

To me that is ultra lame. It’s evidence of poor self-confidence masquerading as big ego, or worse, narcissism. (really same diff actually — people with big egos are narcissistic)
