Wow. Definitely going to have to pick this one up when it comes out. Doubt it will top “M” though.
That’s really exciting to hear. I myself tried to see the French broadcast via the website provided by Roger Ebert and be ame really frustrated that it was shown through another camera at the Berlinale. Not only was it on an angle from the screen, the image wasn’t zoomed in & frequent noises were made by the 2000 present for the outside screening. I couldn’t stand it anymore and stopped after 10 mins. My Q is: was there anyone who actually saw the 147 min version and if so, how was it?
I watched the restored version on Arte television the other day, live from the Berlinale. There was an orchestra playing live. The restored movie is amazing. There are a lot of missing scenes that can be seen now. You can recognize them in the movie, the quality is not very good, but it is interesting because it changes slightly the story. There are also caracters in the movie who now appear in a lot of scenes. In shorter versions you hardly see them.
It was a very exciting moment because this version now is the closest to what has been shown on the Premiere in Berlin in 1927.
Very exciting is also the background story of the movie and how and where the missing parts have been found and added.
Lets hope Studio-Canal doesn’t have the distribution rights.

The Murnau-STiftung Museum owns the film & that means KIno will distribute in the US and I think Masters of Cinema will handle the United KIngdom. Don’t know who might have other areas.
The last restoration did restructure the film according to the screenplay (using stills & title cars to fill in the missing bits) & the film started making a lot more sense. But that’s nothing like seeing the sequences even in somewhat less than perfect condition (but then think of all those ghastly PD copies we used to put up with!). And now ther are less than five minutes missing rom Lang’s original 2.5 hour cut. I don’t know as how I’d be too quick to toss the previous Kino release… there might be extras that are worth keeping.
New trailer
this cut does not have the footage found in Argentina last year?
grumble
-this cut does not have the footage found in Argentina last year?-
It does.
Matt, you aren’t helping. I was looking to putting off buying yet another copy of this film, that I don’t really like all that much.
Just don’t tell me that its coming on blu Ray.
Holy shit! That film looks new! Can’t wait!
Just don’t tell me that its coming on blu Ray—
OK. I won’t tell you that it is.
The Kino website says that it is coming out on dvd and blu ray.

The trailer looks fabulous. I think I may have to double dip and upgrade when it comes out in November.
This is great news, i couldn’t wait for this release ever since i saw the newly found images printed about a year ago. But….. i don’t know about the way Kino designs their DVD/Blurays. Pretty awful

This review has me extremely excited to see the restored cut of the film. It seems that with the holes filled in, the movie is a lot better.
“For years audiences have wondered how good this film might have been had it not been edited. It turns out that it’s better than anyone could ever have expected.”
