“The ending of this film renders the whole thing terrible and ridiculous.”
Which is exactly the point.
How?
You wouldn’t say that Trelkovsky’s plight is itself terrible and ridiculous? People will drive you crazy.
In watching The Tenant, I wondered here and there if it was perhaps his most personal picture, and perhaps semi-autobiographical in a few metaphorical ways, primarily dealing with his experience in America, particularly Hollywood, and the terrible things that drove him to leave the country.
Love this movie. One of my favs.
^ Ditto.
" if it was perhaps his most personal picture, and perhaps semi-autobiographical in a few metaphorical ways"
I think a good argument for that can be made. Roland Torpor, on whose novel the film is based, had a sensibility that certainly meshed with Polanski’s.

The ending of this film renders the whole thing terrible and ridiculous. Polanski’s worst, despite being promising for much of its runtime.
