Three Things MUBI Needs to Improve User Experience

Overall, I feel the interface is incredible. The look of the website is clean and easy to use. I like the recent upgrade with Facebook, where we can just turn ON or OFF the sharing to our Facebook walls. However, after using MUBI for approximately, two years, this is a short list of elements I feel weaken user experience.

(1) HALF-STAR RATINGS
I know this has been mentioned in the past, and not being a website developer, I have no idea how difficult it would be to employ. However, I think that the ability to do so would greatly enhance the website. I know of several people who have left Mubi for other websites for their ability to grant half stars, so I know it is a large issue.

(2) ADDING FILMS TO THE DATABASE
I have submitted approximately 60 films to the Mubi database, but I have also not been able to find many films, especially foreign or older. And sometimes I do not have the time to submit them to the database. It is time consuming and not very practical.
I know that Mubi relies on people who check the information of each film to make sure they are not double entries, or with mistakes, but there has to be an easier method to submit films.
I think that a method similar to that of

(3) MOBILE PHONES (iPod, iPhone, Android) APPS
There is currently only one Mubi app, and it’s merely a quiz game. I think it would be incredible to have an app to rate, add to watch list, browse lists, creates lists, browse profiles. I know that it’s doable in the browsers in the mobile phones, but, again, something more practical would be nice.

I like half-stars. I’m a damn coward who’s usually afraid to commit to a five star rating.

And the half-star suggestion has many followers, but still has gone nowhere, for about a year and half, soooooooo……… (is that a trolling comment?)

Mathew- I give out too many five-star ratings, so I’m definitely with you on the half stars.

Totally agree with the iPhone thing, I often peruse the forum while on the way home from the bus and the site is extremely mobile unfriendly.

Definately agree on the half-stars.

Disagree on half-stars, esp. on a five star rating. Make a choice people.

4 is too far away from 5.

Once you start considering half-steps, everything is infinitely far from everything.

We’ll end up with a ‘thumbs up/down’ or ‘like/dislike’ type system. It’ll happen, always does.

I’d be fine with just a “seen it” check box.

I feel like my inner feelings are being unjustly repressed if I can’t rate my movies out to six decimal places.

I’m afraid of all ratings. I always feel like they’re set in stone and that the rating might influence or suppress any true change of opinion. I’m also insane.

As much as Netflix annoys me, they have put more work into the interface.

This site, however has a front page more cluttered and noisy than a copy of Shonen Jump.

So, Everything in the OP and a cleaner front page that can be seen on an android.

It’s good to have a 4.5 option so we can distinctly separate the best of the best from the great.

What I’d love is an intelligent recommendation engine,

the proper rating scale is with half-stars and /4 not /5. if it’s good enough for leonard maltin, it’s good enough for the rest of us

!. 1/2 star ratings!.

2. Updated Mubi database. I’ve literally lost count of the number of movies that are not on their database.

3. Quizzes. This feature has been available on Flixster for several years.

Why does everyone want half stars? It’s good without them.

2. More options for your “style image”. Like a lot more.

3. 1080 films with a “download” option on the PS3.

No quizzes! Our attentions are too dispersed as it is. What with redundant and repetitive lists. We have Guess the film, and whatever. A feature would be too much. Look at Goodreads, nobody talks about anything, they’re always rating and making quizzes and building their profiles. This site should live because of the quality of discussion, it’s up to the users to make it good. No unnecessary bullet points! Snot good!

And now I’m fine with no half-stars. I would, however, like crescent moons and hearts.

By the way, when I say “lists” I mean in the forum, though not all are bad.

Don’t forget green clovers…

I once proposed a 1-7 green dots rating scale based on the Mubi logo.

I like it.^ (Though I personally have been trying to move away from rating overall. Three stars are all I use, two for uninteresting, four for interesting and three for anything in between.)
