Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has published their picks of the top 100 ‘Essential’ films. I have listed the top dozen here. For the entire list go to -
…. http://tiff.net/essential/about ….
If you wish to read the accompanying article by critic Peter Howell -
a) Google ‘TORONTO STAR’
b) Click on ‘ENTERTAINMENT’
and there it is!
Peter will tell you how the term ‘Essential’ was arrived at, and will make all kinds of apologies because TIFF’s list is not the same as yours. I always look forward to his reviews. By the way, the article appeared in today’s (Oct. 8) edition, but was actually penned on Oct. 7th.
Here’s the top twelve:
1/ The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer)
2/ Citizen Kane (Welles)
3/ L’avventura (Antonioni)
4/ The Godfather (Coppola)
5/ Pickpocket (Bresson)
6/ Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)
7/ Pather Panchali (S. Ray)
8/ Casablanca (Curtiz)
9/ Man with a Movie Camera (Vertov)
10/ Bicycle Thieves (de Sica)
11/ Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Fassbinder)
12/ 8 1/2 (Fellini)
MAVERICK
