Tommy Wiseau - The heir to Ed Wood's throne?

I just recently heard about a film called “The Room,” written, directed, and acted by Tommy Wiseau. Apparently this film has garnered a huge cult following, as it is considered by many who have seen it the worst film ever made. Has anyone seen it on here? How bad is it? If it is as bad as these clips off YouTube suggest, than I want to see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Plz-bhcHryc&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQ4KzClb1C4&feature=related

It is the worst film I have ever seen, but I loved every moment of it. I highly recommend seeing it for a good laugh. At times it is so bad that it seems as if it must be intentional…but its not. Here in Atlanta they show it once a month and people dress up, throw spoons at the screen, act out scenes as they play, etc.

The only true heir to Ed Wood is Rob Marshall.

The Room is brilliant. Tried to get a thread (http://www.theauteurs.com/topics/2636/comments) started a couple months back when I first saw it but I think this film proved too challenging for the auteurs.

The Room is fucking incredible and so is Tommy Wiseau. I have it on DVD and its the best 7 dollars I’ve ever spent. The movie itself is great, but it also includes a “making-of,” which makes you wonder how so many responsible adults could have thought this was a good idea, and a Q&A with Wiseau, which is just as funny and nonsensical as the movie. I’d love for it to pick up some fans on here.

The Room is one of my favorite films. It’s mind blowingly bad and equally as hilarious. I want to go to one of the midnight screenings Flemmon mentioned. I’ve only seen clips from them online, but they seem like a really fun time.

I did not hit her, it’s not true! It’s bullshit! I did not hit her, I did naaahhht…oh, Hi Mark!

For the record, the worst film I’ve ever seen is about Ed Wood being kidnapped by aliens who give them the idea to make PLAN 9 so that humans won’t realize that true invasion plans that are being hatched. It is 45 minutes of misframed mastershots of sheer torture.
I’ve forgotten the name (probably a deliberate act), but Alpha Video releases it (possibly on one of their subsidiary labels).

I just waded through 8 pages of Amazon to see if I could locate the title based on a search for “Ed Wood.” No luck.
But what is it with those Amazon searches … it turned up THE WIRE, RAMBO and NIXON amongst other things … ????

I hadn’t heard of this gentleman. From Wikipedia:

Current and upcoming projects for Wiseau include a sitcom pilot called The Neighbors which he is currently pitching to networks, a book on the differences between 35mm and HD video, a Broadway adaptation of The Room, a Dracula movie, a musical based on Ayn Rand’s life and an untitled second feature film, on which he will begin production in the summer of 2009.

Let me know when the Ayn Rand musical comes out. Sounds good.
This guy sounds like the goods.

So what is The Room all about? Horror?

>>Let me know when the Ayn Rand musical comes out. Sounds good.<<
Well, it certainly sounds different.
(I never expected to find “Ayn Rand” and “good” in the same paragraph …)

NB: The Ed Wood film, btw, is NIGHT OF THE FOOLS and it’s paired with one of Conrad Brooks’ Gypsy Vampire films … a real double-bill from hunger.

The Room is a highly personal tale about a failed relationship Wiseau had. Basically you can tell some girl broke this guy’s heart so he made a movie about it. Only he’s Eastern European, odd looking, doesn’t understand American culture, and cast himself in the lead role along with a bunch of shitty actors. Then he decided the best way to express his pain was to make a movie of him being the nicest guy ever getting fucked over for no reason, complete with 4 graphic sex scenes set to cheesy R&B music, awful dubbing, an overdose of establishing shots, and a character who can only be described as a “kidult.” But the AV Club has done some great pieces on the movie, so I would check out one of these links if you really want to know more.

They just had a piece on ABC news on The Room. Has it exploded that much? Bizarre… I’m not much for the “so bad it’s good” kind of film. But this one seems so intensely personal, it might be worth watching.

It is almost a shame that this film as generated a discussion. While I love it, I don’t think it deserves much more than “Ya, The Room is amazingly horrible and hilarious.” Just go watch it.

One of the funniest films ever made. I’ve been inviting friends round to see my DVD for the past few weeks and all of them have become big fans. I sure hope Wiseau makes his vampire film.

The feeling I get from watching this film, and from observing his interviews, is that Wiseau is a sociopath. I’m not joking or exaggerating, I literally mean that.

He is a sociopath who has managed to collect enough money and self-confidence to “fool some of the people some of the time”, as they say.

Agreed David. It’s a sociopathic’s mind- hence the ‘stilted’ characters and OTT drama. Good on him. More sociopaths should be out there contributing, making stuff, showing up alot of the ridiculousness of what society deems ‘normal’ human behaviour.
