apursansar

There´s no doubt about it that many of the great classics of Latin American Cinema remain undiscovered in most other parts of the world, and DVDs of those films are usually hard to come by. I made of list of those films from Latin American countries which I managed to see and would consider masterpieces of world cinema, and I´d like you to add other titles which you regard as the greatest of Latin America.
-———————————————————————————————————————————-

1. DEUS E O DIABO NA TERRA DO SOL (Black God, White Devil, Glauber Rocha, Brazil 1964)
2. MEMORIAS DEL SUBDESARROLLO (Memories of Underdevelopment, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Cuba 1968)
3. ROSAURA A LAS 10 (Rosaura at 10 o’clock, Mario Soffici, Argentina 1958) -
4. MARÍA CANDELARIA / XOCHIMILCO (Maria Candelaria, Emilio “El Indio” Fernández, Mexico 1944)

well, this is a weak spot for me i must admit. I’ve only seen half listed so far. Had i found those i have seen up to the quality of some of my favourite books, Love in the Time of Cholera, House of the Spirits, Garden of Forking Paths, – and this in spite of having read very little Latin American- i would have seen many more.

Hour of the Furnaces (Solanas)
Silent Light (Reygadas)
Black God White Devil (Rocha)
Central Station (Salles)
Bus 174 (Padilha)
El (Bunuel)
Nazarin (Bunuel)
La Frontera (Larrain)
The Holy Girl (Martel)
Foreign Land (Salles)- which i picked in the Portuguese thread too! If disallowed, perhaps Machuca, or The Holy Mountain, Historias Minimas, Y Tu Mama Tambien..

I’ve seen very little, and most of what I have seen is contemporary, from Mexico.

That noted Maria Candelaria is a magnificent film; I’d certainly like to see more of Fernandez’ 40s/50s work.

Aventurera – Alberto Gout – is another interesting one, of of the only other mid-century Mexican films I’ve seen. The blending of cabaret/musical and rather intense film noir influences was very striking in this one.

El aura – Fabián Bielinsky
La Niña santa – Lucrecia Martel
El silencio de Neto – Luis Argueta
Batalla en el cielo – Carlos Reygadas
Central do Brasil – Walter Salles
El Norte – Gregory Nava
Men With Guns – John Sayles
El ángel exterminador – Buñuel

Deep Crimson is an interesting film I just saw recently. The direction I found most compelling and I’m intrigued by what other work Arturo Ripstein has done.

Here’s another one to add to the list.

El Vampire (1957 dir. Fernando Méndez)

Arturo Ripstein is indeed one of Mexico´s greatest directors, and I would recommend you to check out his film El lugar sin límites (Place without Limits, 1978) and his adaptaion of a novel by Egyptian nobel prize winner Nagib Mahfouz called Principio y Fin (Beginning and End, 1993). And La Batalla de Chile ranks alongside La Hora de los Hornos for being Latin America´s most important documentary feature.

There’s a great film by Bruno Barreto called Amor Bandido. It’s definitely a B picture, but it’s pushed to hyper-romantic extremes. A film made with blood and guts. And hormones.

Some recent films in no particular order and without including any non Latin American born. Sadly I have the feeling that the “new wave” of Latin American cinema is not as exciting as it was some years ago… The last films I saw all seem to follow some kind of pattern that was started brilliantly by films like Whiskey and continued less succesfully by Gigante- Adrián Biniez or Parque vía-Enrique Rivero (minimalistic, funny with a touch of sadness, lonely characters). By the other hand you have the L. Alonso school that it turned in a few years into the boring new wave of Latin American cinema (La Hamaca Paraguaya-Paz Encina)

Whiskey- Pablo Stoll & Juan Pablo Rebella
Los muertos- Lisandro Alonso
La niña santa- Lucrecia Martel
Batalla en el cielo- Carlos Reygadas
Tony Manero- Pablo Larrain

la fórmula secreta (1965, Rubén Gámez) is the very best mexican avant-garde film. includes texts by the great juan rulfo narrated by chiapas poet jaime sabines; without a doubt: at my top 10 of mexican films ever; a must you shouldn’t avoid if you’re intrested in latinoamerican films

Francisco J. Torres

I’ll add-
Rodrigo D (No futuro)
La Nina Santa

Terra em Transe/Earth Entranced – Glauber Rocha
Ensayo de un Crimen/The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz – Luis Buñuel

… and a short: Las Hurdes/Land Without Bread – Luis Buñuel
