I’ve only seen three Francois Ozon movies, but I’m looking to see a lot more soon, so I posted this thread to get some ideas. My three are:

1- Swimming Pool
2- Under the Sand
3- Water Drops on Burning Rocks

What films of his do others recommend?

8 Femmes

It’s funny and has an amazing cast: Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Béart, Virginie Ledoyen, Fanny Ardant, Ludivine Sagnier, etc.

I second recommmendation of 8 Femmes. 5 × 2 is interesting as well.

My very first Ozon was the grim yet sexy ‘fairy tale’ LES AMANTS CRIMINELS (Criminal Lovers) and I think it’s still my favourite, even though the story makes a bizarre tonal shift at the end that just didn’t work for me. I also enjoyed LE TEMPS QUI RESTE (Time to Leave) with Melvil Poupaud and Veleria Bruni-Tedeschi (the good Bruni ;-) and the Haneke-esque REGARDE LA MER (See the Sea).

Criminal Lovers was my first Ozon film too!!! I think his best are Time to leave, water drops on burning rocks, Sea the sea, and angel.

Some of his shorts are cool.

Just re-watched Under the Sand. It’s excellent.

I’ve only seen Swimming Pool and Under the Sand, both which I thought were pretty bad. Very self-serious stuff and quite boring.

Angel may be one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

I prefer the sea too. The ocean. The crashing waves. The feeling of danger, that you could lose footing at any time and be swept away. Pools are boring. There’s no excitement, no—no feeling of infinity.
