We’re talking American television of course. These are programs that had a major impact on me, at any rate. I think they’re all highly influential in their own right.
I Love Lucy
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Twilight Zone
CBS Children’s International Film Festival (where I must have developed my love of cinema)
The Ed Sullivan Show
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour
Leonardo (an Italian program on da Vinci that, unbelievably enough, aired every Sunday one summer after Ed Sullivan on the CBS network)
NBC Experimental TV Theater (another time filler on Sunday afternoons—inconceivable that a major network would do something like this now—even a major cable network. These were truiy experimental productions.)
The Great American Dream Machine
An American Family
The Tonight Show (with Johnny Carson)
All in the Family
Saturday Night Live (flat as it may be half the time or more, it’s had some great viral moments)
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder
Late Night (with both David Letterman and Conan O’Brien)
Twin Peaks
The Simpsons
Seinfeld
The Daily Show/Colbert Report
It’s probably pretty obvious I’m not much for hourlong dramas. Never have been, probably never will be. I prefer to get my drama from the movies.

Heard good things about Riget.
CURB is a win
The Wire, Six Feet Under, and The Sopranos. It gets pretty arbitrary after that.
Can you imagine if Scenes from a Marriage was a regular show on TV? What kind of world that would be…
Are we REALLY counting Fanny Och? That just seems unfair.
Well after reading this thread shoot me in the head for not having seen Riget. I kind of feel like not even posting until after that. The Wire too seems to be getting ungodly praise from every corner.
I’ll just drop my best ofs n lieu of an actual top ten for the time being until i’ve seen those two.
Best Drama – In Treatment
Runner Up: Six Feet Under
Best Comedy – The Thick of It
Runner Up: Curb
Best Animated – Neon Genesis Evangelion
Runner Up: Mushishi
Best Short form series – Fanny Och Alexander
Best Show. Period. – Twin Peaks
And that’s the true testament of Twin Peaks’ greatness. The fact that so many people will still champion it despite it falling into terrible disrepair after episode 16. The good episodes are just toooo good to ignore. They elevate the show beyond the rest.
