Knife in the Water

The only other I’ve seen is The Ninth Gate, which wouldn’t have made the list had I only seen five. Didn’t particularly like Knife in the Water, but it’s been a while. I may need to revisit.

1. CHINATOWN
2. REPULSION
3. THE TENANT
4. DEATH AND THE MAIDEN

while waiting for #5, KNIFE IN THE WATER will have to do.

Fearless Vampire Killers is woefully underrated. Otherwise there really is a Polanski canon:
Chinatown
Rosemary’s Baby
The Tenant
repulsion
Knife in the Water

Polanksi? Twice? Slow down on that typing, Matthew.

Richard got it down. Polanski also made the best Macbeth even if the fight between him and McDuff is unintentionally hilarious.

Repulsion – don’t eat tainted food or arms will start coming out of the walls
The Tenant – watchout where you move into
Fearless Vampire Killers – if you can’t see his reflection – run!
Rosemary’s Baby – don’t eat those lousy tasting herbs the neighbour lady gives you
The Pianist – play for all your worth and run like the devil

6. Knife in the Water 7. Macbeth 8. Tess (isn’t Tess a parable about Polanski’s own life? – no wonder he took this up) 9. Chinatown & all the other Polanski films (some I have yet to see).

A great filmmaker, actor, and artist. Do you think he will soon be able to return to the US? I hear that the original complainant in his California rape case wants the prosecutors to drop charges. What a bizarre life this man has had, but his film art has risen above it and illuminated it, don’t you think?

  1. Chinatown (I’ve seen it multiple times and never grew tired of it)
  2. The Tenant (one of the creepiest movies I know & I like it better than Rosemary’s Baby & Repulsion)
  3. Death and the Maiden (very underrated gem – thrilling story and superb performances by Weaver & Kingsley)
  4. Dance of the Vampires (I smile everytime I think of it)
  5. Cul-de-sac (simply weird! And R.I.P Françoise Dorléac)
  6. When Angels Fall Down… (my favorite short film of him)
