I forgot about Jay Reatard’s Matador Singles ’08 collection. Sort of a compilation of a gimmick, but it works great as an album. Not as good as Blood Visions, but still great.

EXCELLENT JOB EVERYONE….lots of great artists!

Seems like TV on the Radio’s “Dear Science” is getting a lot of votes as well. Those Fleet Foxes should watch out!

Oh, and love for Husker Du has no time frame. They are eternal just like vampires, Spam, and boy bands. Oh second thought, they are better then the previous three….put together!

While not his absolute best album, I really liked Beck’s Modern Guilt. Also, I’ve recently discovered and fallen in love with Johnny Flynn. His first full-length, A Larum, came out in May.

I vote for any fly by night lame band like the killers or deerhooves.
You know, I must say ya’ll should keep this lame name dropping shit on myspace. Fuck todays music- If Iron and Whinos are music I’d rather be in the coma they put me in then listen to their shit. No one makes anything good anymore and We All Know It.
If I am stuck listening to Roxy Music, the Idiot by iggy pop, the smiths, and Bowie’s Berlin phase the rest of my life so be it.
Rock/Pop music these days is all about who listens to the most obscure, unheard of music that they all belong underground but thanks to lame websites they are “out there” and everyone must be cool so they have to like this total crap.
Exactly, name one band that in ten years are better than Husker Du? Go ahead with the old man jokes now.

My favorite album of the year has got to be Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s Lie Down in the Light. Just great music I could listen to for days on end…really.

Coldplay’s newest took me several listens, but I’m really starting to enjoy it more (though still overrated). MGMT’s was very good, the new Kanye isn’t bad, Santogold is still rocking the iPod pretty hard.

Hauschka’s album Ferndorf is really good, but not everyone’s into the neo-classical thing. Portishead’s Third was definetely the best of the several “long-awaited” albums that were released this year (way better than Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, The Verve, and I think there were a few more that were a long time coming). Bloc Party’s new album is great, but not quite as good as the last one.

This new collaboration between Esau and Radioclit called The Very Best is really good. It’s not technically a real release, just a downloadable album of mostly covers to kind of give you an idea of what their album will be like, but it’s very enjoyable, and available for free on The Very Best’s myspace page.

But, to stop rambling and make a simple list, here’s who’s 2008 albums I dug this year:

MGMT
Portishead
Bloc Party
The Very Best
Hauschka
Coldplay
M83
Broken Social Scene
I’m From Barcelona
The Killers
Kanye West
Santogold
The Sounds
TV on the Radio
Tilly & the Wall
Weezer
Mirah

Dusty – The Microphones had a new album this year? How did I miss that?

Stephen Lilley

All the albums that dominated my iPod this year were all the top albums from 2007; I didn’t really get anything super new. Just played a lot of Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, and the New Pornographers over and over again.

I still think “Funeral” is the best album of the century thusfar, and I’ll fight anyone who thinks differently :)

Lots of good choices to get at BORDERS with all the holiday gift cards (provided that my stocking is not full of coal). At last check, there were sadly no Husker Du shirts at Hot Topic in the mall but their taste is questionable at best.

after reading through all of this I would have to say that my vote also goes to Zen Arcade! I finally bought a hard copy this year (To replace worn burnt ones), so it kind of counts (not really though)… for real Husker Du!

Marko

They’ve already been mentioned, but 3 come to mind:

1. Bon Iver – “For Emma, Forever Ago”
2. Wild Beasts – “Limbo, Panto”
3. Broken Social Scene presents Brendan Canning – “Something for All of Us…”

That’s right, I forgot the Raveonettes album was this year. That was a good one.
