In 2008 was a weird year for me in terms of music.

In 2007 there were three albums I was always playing on my iPod:

Korn – “(Untitled)”

Halford – “The Metal God Essentials Volume 1”

Dethklok – “The Dethalbum”

In 2006 I was listening to:

Tool – “10,000 Days”

Ministry – “Rio Grand Blood”

Mastadon – “Blood Mountain”

In 2008 I was burned early in the year by purchasing the deluxe edition of Judas Priest’s “Nostradomus”. It was better then I expected. I expected it to be COMPLETELY un-listenable. The only thing that came with it was a free ticket to a concert that I didn’t get to go to. After buying that album I finally decided to give up on physical media. I now download my music.

I postponed my purchase of Ministry’s “The Last Sucker” because I found Al Jourgenson’s obsession with George W. Bush distracting to the quality of the music. Dedicating ONE album to bashing the President is just plain artistic expression. Dedicating THREE albums to bashing W is just plain unhealthy. (Even though they are some of the BEST albums he’s ever produced).

After Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” came out I had lost my desire to listen to anything else. It is strange, before I purchased that album, I was voracious. I was downloading anything I could and wanted to listen to more and more. After “Death Magnetic” came out that desire just dropped away from me.

It is not like “Death Magnetic” is a great album. By Metallica’s standards it is a good album. But that was all I needed to listen to. (Download it off of iTunes the sound quality is BETTER)

So far this year I am listening to Mastadon’s “Crack the Sky” and it is awesome! Especially the last track “The Last Baron”.

I am anxiously anticipating Marilyn Manson’s “The High End of Low” next month.

I dunno about top albums of 2008 but this is all that rocks my iPod:

Animal Collective, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Man Man, The Dirtbombs’ Ultraglide in Black, The Black Keys’ Rubber Factory, The Thermals’ The Body, the Blood, the Machine, NMH’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (of course), Pavement’s Slanted and Enchanted, Loretta Lynn’s Van Lear Rose, Panda Bear’s Person Pitch, Michael Nyman’s scores for Peter Greenaway films, Liars’ self-titled, a whole lotta Beck, some Gogol Bordello, and… okay, I’m a Girl Talk nut. I have an attention deficiency so it works out for me.

Glemaud has some fantastic taste in music! In fact everyone pretty much does.
Radiohead-In Rainbows by far the best album of 2008. Love Sigur Ros’ new one as well, same with Brendan Canning’s Something For All of Us, Dig!! Lazarus Dig!!, Oracular Spectacular, Modern Guilt, Viva La Vida and Sam Roberts Band’s, Love at the End of the World.

Good stuff KJ, love that Death Ambient.

A few late ‘08 releases I can’t stop listening to:
John Tilbury – Triadiac Memories (Morton Feldman)/Notti Stellate a Vagli (H. Skempton)
Jim O’Rourke – Long Night (one of the best pieces of ambient music I’ve heard lately)
Magma – Studio Zund (a box of Magma, hell yeah..)
