4. Grave of the Fireflies
5. South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
6. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
7. Wall-E

Spirited Away
The Lion King
Aladdin
Iron Giant
Cowboy Bebop
Toy Story 1&2
Wall E
Incredibles
ones that havent been mentioned:
waltz with bashir
Corpse Bride
Adam, you liked Wall E more than Up?
Up was a terrible piece of sh!t. The kid was by far the most annoying character I’ve ever encountered in a film. Pixar is terribly overrated. Had to get that off my chest.
Drew, I’m not entirely sure to be honest. My first impression is that I prefer Up. However, I have seen Wall-E five times and Up only once. Up will have to take the test of repeated viewings before I can place it higher than Wall-E. I’m quite confident it will.
What I think is Wall E is more of a perfect film. It is much smoother and has less flaws, but I think it is also less ambitious. I have to give credit to Up for being very original and having a very human story. I would say right now I would rather a film to be shooting for more and just miss it, then go for less and meet its goals.
does it matter what kind of animation?
Classic Disney (from the 40s and early 50s— Pinocchio, Bambi, etc.)
Tale of Tales (Yuriy Norshteyn)
Studio Ghibli (my favorite being Spirited Away)
Triplets of Belleville (Sylvain Chomet)
New Disney/Pixar (everything from Lion King to Finding Nemo, haven’t really seen the most recent ones)
Ghost in the Shell (Mamoru Oshii)
1. Howl’s Moving Castle
2. Toy Story
3. Nightmare Before Christmas
4. Spirited Away
I’m a total Miyazaki fan. Anything by him (or Studio Ghibili) is pure gold.
Surprised Triplets of Belleville is only on one person’s list. A must watch!
Hi,
2 films that really help folks understand music …
Walt Disney’s Fantasia — should be in this list … and the Italian counterpart and just as good … Allegro Non-Troppo … which is a must see film if you also happen to like music.
1. Pinocchio
2. Howl’s Moving Castle
3. Fantasia
4. Dumbo
5. Belleville Rendezvous
6. Toy Story 2
7. The Iron Giant
8. Spirited Away
9. Grave of the Fireflies
10. Wall-E.
Number one is The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. When I watch TLK it immediately goes to Nr. 1 and when I watch TLM that one goes immediately to Nr. 1. Other amazing animated films:
Toy Story
A Bug’s Life
WALL•E
Aladdin
Pinocchio
Bambi
Little Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland
The Land Before Time (only the first one)
Just saw Hedgehog in the Fog, only 10 minutes but pretty tight. Check in on youtube.
try Tale of Tales also by Norshteyn
HEDGEHOG IN THE FOG
HEAVY TRAFFIC
Looking at these lists, I just realized I have to re-watch alot of movies as I hardly remember some. Even those obvious Disney ones I watched countelss times as a child like Aladdin and Lion King. The top 5 may not be the best, but they are easily the most influential of my childhood. I can’t imagine what my outlook on animation would be without Akira or Cowboy Bebop.
Akira
Toy Story/Toy Story 2
Nightmare Before Christmas
Wall-E
Cowboy Bebop
Princess Mononoke
Ratatouille
Persepolis
Spirited Away
South Park
Fantasia
Everything else then follows
The Danish Poet
The Hedgehog in the Fog
The Big Snit
Harvie Krumpet
When the Day Breaks
Wallace & Gromit in The Wrong Trousers
En marchant
How Wings Are Attached to the Backs of Angels
Betty Boop in Snow-White
Creature Comforts
Okay perhaps this a cheat – these are all shorts – but I honestly can’t think of ten animated feature films I like.
miyazaki anything. it’s all incredible.
in no particular order: fantasia, triplets of belleville, persepolis, yellow submarine, the incredibles, south park: bigger, longer, and uncut, wall-e, and i’m not sure if it counts because it’s not entirely animated, but the animation in pink floyd’s the wall is awesome.
Bambi
Wings of Honneamise
Patlabor 2
The Aristocats
Akira
Princess Mononoke
Fantasia
Spirited Away
My Neighbour Totoro
Snow White & the 7 Dwarfs
oooo…. and a ton of looney tune shorts
Owen Sound; i’ll second Betty Boop’s Snow White, an extraordinary eccentric film all should see.
My top 15 (not in order)
Akira
Tekkon Kinkreet
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Ghost in the Shell
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
Fox and the Hound
Tokyo Godfathers
James and the Giant Peach
Nightmare Before Christmas
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Castle of Cagliostro
Howl’s Moving Castle
Finding Nemo
I forgot about Tekkon Kinkreet – that was really good and tried something different (even if it was only following the manga). And just got to see Tokyo Godfathers last week – better story than 99.9% of the guff out there – truly inspiring. The fact that you forgot that one of the characters was a drag queen speaks volumes. Also has the funniest (very darkly) comic scene (angel looking over the old geezer for those who’ve seen it – hah!!!) Actually anyone not interested in anime should definately give this a try!!
The Fleischer’s Superman cartoons.
The Lion King
The End of Evangelion
Waltz with Bashir
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Coraline
The Animatrix
Mi-ya-za-ki!
gino
1. Ratatouille
2. Coraline
3. Persepolis
4. Meet The Robinsons
5. Alice In Wonderland
6. Spirited Away
7. The Fox and The Hound
8. Yellow Submarine
9. (Hopefully) The Fantastic Mr. Fox
