Fanny & Alexander
The Seventh Seal
Wild Strawberries
Persona
Winter Light
For all you fans of “Crys and Whispers”; here’s the programme for the Bergman festival here in Stockholm. Opening show is Crys and Whispers by a Dutch theatre group. Bit strong for my tastes !

Fanny & Alexander
Winter Light
Scenes from a Marriage
Seventh Seal
>>The Seventh Seal – the squire is one of the greatest dark comic roles in film history. just too classic not to put first. “lille kunigunda” is a funny nickname for a sweetheart.<<
I canNOT believe that I never caught this before. Cunegunde is the name of the sweetheart in Voltaire’s CANDIDE …
1.Persona
2.Wild Strawberries
3.The Seventh Seal
4.Fanny and Alexander
5.The Virgin Spring
Hour of the Wolf, the Virgin Spring, and Scenes from a Marriage are easily my favorite Bergman films followed VERY closey by Persona and the Seventh Seal…
currently reading his “images” memoir and it’s ummm revealing to say the least so far :)
I cant list them in any order, but here they are:
Persona, Wild Strawberries, Smiles of a Summer Night, The Silence, Through a Glass Darkly, Hour of the Wolf, Serpent’s Egg, Fanny and Alexander
F and A was a revelation to me, a great introduction to Bergman (even though I had seen Wild Strawberries before)
The trilogy was excellent. Silence is one of my favorites, and the play at the beginning of Through a Glass Darkly is just superb.
The two Bergman movies I push for most is Hour of the Wolf and Serpent’s Egg, because they have very bad reputations and I think they are generally misunderstood. Serpent’s Egg is about how much human beings are controlled by chemical impulses, but what on the surface seems to be inspired by people’s relationships. A good meditation on what could turn a poor German population into accepting Nazism as its saving philosophy. Hour of the Wolf has been mistakenly (this annoys me so much!) called a horror film, or something like that. It’s one of the best meditations on madness, and the identity of an artist. Wonderfully figurative, and while it achieves REAL horror, it’s ultimately dismissing to term it as that.

i watched fanny and alexander recently and was blown away; certainly his most stunning achievement out of the films of his i’ve seen. however, i found autumn sonata to be the most moving and possibly the most emotionally draining film i know.
Winter Light
The Silence
Cries and Whispers
but I have not seen them all, so I will be back!!
Winter Light
Through a Glass Darkly
The Silence
1. HOUR OF THE WOLF – very underrated. A truly haunting trip inside Bergman’s fractured psyche.
2. SEVENTH SEAL
3. VIRGIN SPRING
4. SHAME
5. THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY
I somehow have never gotten around to watching Fanny and Alexander, which I will soon rectify. I really disliked Persona, but I’m obviously in the minority on that one. A couple of others have just been meh or just Ok by me, but there’s still a few I need to check out, I believe.
My current favorites:
1. Through a Glass Darkly
2. Winter Light
3. The Silence
4. Fanny and Alexander
5. Persona
6. The Virgin Spring
7. Cries and Whispers
8. The Seventh Seal
9. Scenes from a Marriage
10. Wild Strawberries
“The Best Intentions” written by Ingmar Bergman and directed by Bille August could also be added as one of his very best films.

for me
1-winter light
2-seventh seal
3-fanny and Alexander
4-persona
5-Wild Strawberries
Scenes From a Marriage is his best film. It’s simple, cut off in the strictest and most literal sense than any of his other films, and it’s basically an acting marathon. It’s a beautiful stage play with some of the most honest depictions of relationship problems in any film. A lot of it’s material is probably taken from Bergman’s own experiences. Can’t say that about many of his other films except the unofficial sequel to this, Saraband, and probably Fanny and Alexander.
Autumn Sonata
The Silence
Cries and Whispers
The Virgin Spring
Fanny and Alexander without a doubt. It’s so personal and so heart-breakingly beautiful.
Can you believed he preferred the theatre and didn’t think his greatest strength was directing film?
Persona
Fanny and Alexander
Cries and Whispers
Winter Light
The Seventh Seal
That’s my top 5.
Persona
Fanny and Alexander
Cries and Whispers
Winter Light
The Seventh Seal
That’s my top 5.
I have seen Persona, Seventh seal, wild strawberries, winter light, through a glass darkly, the silence, cries and whispers, hour of the wolf, and fanny and alexander. I can definitely say that Bergman is my personal favorite director and as to which film’s I love the most it comes down to three which I can’t choose between. Persona, which I think is his most artistic and thought provoking. Fanny and Alexander wgich I think is his most wonderfully put together and his most accesible. And then there is Cries and whispers, which to me is the most powerful film ever made.
The Silence – The sheer silence of a world without God as part of Bergman’s trilogy concerning religion and the absence of God. Harrowing and strange, but haunting.
Wild Strawberries
Through A Glass Darkly
Scenes From A Marriage (I like the TV version better)
The Seventh Seal
Persona
My favorite films of Bergman’s in order.
“Winter Light” my favorite Nr.1!
I have seen more movies directed by Ingmar Bergman than by any other director. I think it’s pretty hard to rank them, but I will try it anyway:
1. Persona (1966)

3. Scener ur ett äktenskap (1973)
4. Nattvardsgästerna (1963)

6. Smultronstället (1957)
7. Sommarnattens leende (1955)
8. Ansiktet (1958)
9. Tystnaden (1963)
10. Höstsonaten (1978)

Persona
The Silence of God Trilogy
The Seventh Seal
I feel like Hour of the Wolf never gets as much love as it deserves. But my all time favorite is the Seventh Seal.
persona
you can hardly go wrong with bergman
Persona is a great, great film. A lot of films become irrelevant after they become parodied and aped. But Persona continues to be great despite being parodied in places like the Simpsons.

Where did you find Face to Face, Juan?
