Not what I was expecting when it was billed as apocalyptic. Looks very interesting though! He certainly put together a solid cast.

Clarice the Specter

It looks like he’s focusing on the two women…seems quite different from Antichirst.

Malik

Don’t worry Clarice, I’m sure the women will be roundly punished.

I’m down with a new von Trier.

Dimitris Psachos

Yuck, the cast is borderline mediocre and the plot seems like a Hollywood b-movie drama-rehash of the 60’s.

The great Von Trier is gone, long live the New Age Von Trier and his shitty antics.

I’m unsure about what he wants.

What was Charlotte Gainsbourg doing looking so panicked on the golf course?

Oh boy, Antiterra.

Looks interesting. Has some cool imagery but it looks like it could be called Melodramia.

Looks interesting. I’d see it for Gainsbourg and Rampling alone.

DIMITRIS PSAHOS: What is the great Trier then, “Riget”?

Dimitris Psachos

^ Yup, Riget, Element of Crime, Europa and even Breaking the Waves although that was the beginning of a highly “strict” career afterwards.

Yeah looks a bit melodramatic but that can be fun too. My guess is that he’s using this apocalyptic event as a catalyst for the sisters to really get ugly toward each other. The husband seems altogether absent from the trailer. In this way it reminds me of Robert Altman’s A Wedding. At least the trailer didn’t give much away about the details of the story’s conflict… it just seemed to confuse me. Like what Ben said about Gainsbourg panicking on the golf course. Gainsbourg was probably more shocked by something mean that Kirsten had said than any natural or cosmic disaster. When women fight it gets pretty below the belt. Story aside, I’m excited to see how the set is dressed for the wedding.

I don’t know but this trailer made me roll my eyes. It’s slick, it’s manipulative in a totally used way (ooh, let’s go see this just for the Kirsten Dunst naked scenes!), it’s using well-known actors (ooh, another draw!), and yeah, melodrama galore. I have this feeling that Von Trier has found a pattern to bring in the bucks.

So good for him but uh, unless I’m totally wrong about the trailer, zzzzzzzz…… for me, anyway.

I loved Breaking The Waves. However I hated Zentropa (Europa). I guess I’m hot and cold about Von Trier.

is this the new pre-hate thread?

odilonvert

Lol! Pre-hate? I’m just saying my impressions of the trailer, if that’s what’s coming down the pike, I don’t think I’m going to be lovin’ it. But I’ll reserve my review for if/when I see the movie. That’s only fair.

I have an idea: let’s add trailers to the database :)

No, seriously I recently watched a trailer of Ceritfied Copy (Kiarostami) that made me cringe. The film is incredible good though. We could have a Kiarostami hate thread just for that trailer.

Don’t worry Clarice, I’m sure the women will be roundly punished

Trailers are an art form in and of themselves, why not?

What would be really funny is have people post their “before” reactions based on trailers, and later after seeing the movie, their “after” reactions. Were they mislead? Or not?

Not much is going to keep me away from Stellan Skarsgaard and Charlotte Gainsbourg but Kirsten Dunst just might do it.

Hated BTW, liked Dogville. Still baffled by Antichrist but my was it pretty looking.

odilonvert

Um yeah, Kirstin Dunst, I don’t know why but something about her there, ugh…

Trailers are in general misleading they are aimed at marketing and they are another film by definition. That’s why the pre-hate :) threads are pointless to begin with (I correct: this is not a hate thread – the one that created Malik… it might be one)

I love Kirstin Dunst :)

RE Antiterra aka Demonia

:)

Dimitris Psachos

How can anyone hate Breaking the Waves but still be mesmerized by Antichrist is beyond me…by far the most revolting of Von Trier films. I wasn’t excited about Manderley either but man…Antichrist was the tip of the iceberg of immediate artistic decline…

…and Kirsten Dunst should just quit acting period…

Robert W Peabody III

is this the new pre-hate thread?

No this is the proto-hate thread.

Pre is from the latin ‘before’.
Proto is from the Greek ‘first’.

The film is hated before it opens (pre-hated), but this is the first hate thread.

I didn’t like Antichrist but hell it was pretty I agree and this seems pretty as well

So it’s proto AND pre?

The word PROTO is pretty.

odilonvert

Antichrist isn’t something I’d be interested in seeing. But then, I’m not into horror and gore.

I don’t hate Kirstin Dunst, but I fear she may be falling into pattern acting, as many young actors do… The expressions on her face in this trailer reminded me of the expressions on her face in Marie Antoinette, in Spiderman. There was something awfully familiar there.

Again, I cannot judge her performance based on a silly trailer. You are right that “pre-hate” threads are useless. The more I think about it, the more useless saying anything I just said feels.

Other than that the trailer wouldn’t have me running out to see the movie, which means it didn’t work for me as it should have.
