In terms of actual content, the difference between the two editions isn’t very dramatic. In the R-rated version the S&M hentai anime viewed by the characters is pixelated to a greater degree. And I believe one of the scenes involving the central pay-per-view torture site isn’t as detailed. What’s great about the Unrated release is the second disc which contains a slew of pertinent extras. I’d definitely suggest Netflix before you go any further. I’m not sure what you’ve seen from Assayas so far, but you’re likely in for a surprise (hopefully a pleasant one).
Demonlover is NEVER a pleasant surprise. I don’t mean that in a bad way, the movie is wonderful, but it’s not pleasant.
I have the R-rated version, it was cheaper and not a whole lot was different. Go forward with the rental. Honestly and truly, Demonlover is a movie that I don’t ever want to see again, though I own it and will probably never get rid of it. So a rental should be good enough for most viewers.

Having read about Demonlover and viewed other films by Assayas, I’m really looking forward to this movie. That said, I don’t really want to spend $25 to buy it from Amazon before I’ve even viewed it. The obvious solution is Netflix, but they only offer an R-rated version, which I’m assuming is edited for content. Can anyone compare the versions and let me know how dramatic of a difference there is? I don’t want to waste my time with the film if it’s totally different. Thanks.
