I can not get past the half way mark with these 3 films—Even Herzog highly recommended the 2 Korine films—I’ve had no problem finishing the worst of late Coppola films and I still consider him one of few Masters of Cinema—help me out here—what am I missing?

I don’t think you’re missing anything.

Julien Donkey Boy was a perfect chance for Herzog to exercise a latent sadism I believe he has.
You’re not missing anything.

Watch Mister Lonely, it’s his most mature work.

Sam, I’ve see Mr. Lonely, and it’s a rather remarkable movie.

Ugh… I actually made it through Gummo… never again. A lot of the Dogme 95 films are unwatchable for me. Couldn’t get through The Idiots.

I’ve only seen Gummo and Mr. Lonely. I like the latter more, but I probably won’t be looking for anything to watch by him again.

i’ve had first hand experience with schizophrenia and thought Julian Donkey Boy was a plausible look into the paranoia that they experience in life. I watched Gummo the same way our four fathers watched freak shows and youth without youth was a little over bloated, but Tetro is great!

I’m not able to watch Address Unknown by Kim Ki-duk, even though it seems to be one of his best movies. It’s just an orgy in tragedy, would sadden me for weeks if I watched it.

I should have tried harder t stay with Julien, I think. But I get so distracted whenever I watch a Dogme 95 movie, about remembering what all their rules are, and if they’re following them, that it sometimes lessens the little enjoyment they give. I am looking forward to giving Gummo a try some day.

I think all three of the films are worthwhile.

I believe that all three films are wonderful. Gummo, and JDB in particular. They aren’t traditional films, but its time for cinema to evolve. We have been using narrative as the backbone to films for over 100 years, but thats not life. Life starts at birth, and stops at death, in between are stories, there are no master narratives that rule peoples lives, just stories, and thats what Harmony reflects in his films. He is very much ahead of his times, much like Godard, and Anger.

None of those are worse than Ken Parks (written by Harmony Korine, directed by Larry Clark). Though I did manage to get through it, it’s an empty piece of shit that should be shown in film schools on how not to make a film. Korine is a very overrated writer, not to mention director. There’s nothing Korine’s attempted to reveal about human nature that Cassavetes and Bergman didn’t already convey thirty years (or more) before.

I’ve been putting off Coppola’s Youth without Youth, but eventually I’ll watch it.

All masterpieces of modern cinema.

I’ve never seen Youth Without Youth but when I was younger I was obsessed with Gummo and Julien Donkey Boy. This was when I was just getting into film and they seemed so unique and refreshing compared to everything else I was watching at the time. I haven’t seen either in quite a while but I’m curious to see how I’d view them now.

Tideland is a recent movie with which I had a difficult time. It had a lot of things in common with Gummo but I had much less difficulty watching Gummo…

Yeah Ken Park was pretty wank. But i don’t think thats as much of Korines fault as it is clarks, who gave Korine the full outline and basically said write dialogue, (i thought the dialogue was the only decent part).

and in regards to Cassavete and Bergman, i don’t think its fair to say that they have cornered the market on revealing human nature, because human “nature” and behavior is constantly shifting with the hegemony. Also, I didn’t say Korine is ahead of his time for revealing elements of human nature, i said he’s ahead of his time in regards to the form of narrative, or rather lack of a “strong” narrative structure he uses. He presents setting, character, and story, but not a strong narrative.

Those are very unwatchable for sure.
