Vancouverites Unite

…and we can be a sweet sidewalk gang again, terrorizing pedestrians. I am so into it.

Vancouverites,

Give me your best pitch for why I should move to Vancouver. I think I would love it because of my love for nature and the fact that I like friendly, healthy, somewhat smallish cities with good vibes to it. But is the film industry in Vancouver strong enough to make a living? What is the general atmosphere? How high is the rent? Are the people friendly? How difficult is it to emigrate across the border there?

Please convince me. I want to go!

We should figure out which Ozu/Renoir dates work best for the majority. I’ll also likely be down for Dr. Strangelove. Then comes the Film Noir lineup…..

Ahhh, Marko’s making me feel like such a slacker… I should really be thesis-writing this month. Blah. :(

If Friday the 10th is out, then I’d personally prefer Saturday the 11th… and if not the 11th, then I’ll try to make it to whichever day the majority chooses, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to.

I’m fine with either the Friday or the Saturday.

Vancouver has the biggest film industry in the world , second to L A , and is growing fast. Rent is not too bad and the people and atmosphere are of many cultures, all of which are very warm and friendly. Vancouver is the place to be

PS. I DO NOT work for the tourism board for Vancouver I am just a satisfied customer.

let’s go with Saturday the 11th. Everyone okay with that?

11th works fine

Fine with me.

Scooter, the vibe is definitely good here. I’m not involved in the film industry here, so I can’t really comment on that…but there are wonderful opportunities to view films. The climate is good all year around (lots of rain though), and there are so many great areas to hang out (some with lots of character).

Vancouver does not disappoint.

So, are we still doing this tomorrow? Shall we meet at Starbucks beforehand?

I vote we do movies first and meet after. But that’s totally self serving to my schedule so I understand if it doesn’t work for other people.

I second Adriana’s notion, i’d say we’ll have lots more to talk about after seeing two masterworks; but where? (seeing as everything will probably be closed in our vicinity)

Adriana

I think the real problem will be finding somewhere to go on a Saturday night where we can actually hear each other talk.

Adriana

PS I cant make it to Tokyo story, but I’ll be there for La regle du jeu. See you guys there

Adriana

Argh, sorry guys, Im stuck at work late. Hope you all had fun!

Joshua W

I also did not make it out tonight due to unforeseen circumstances. Ditto Adriana’s sentiment.

No worries. It was a superb night at the cinema, though!

I’m going away soon, so the next thing I can do will be the Easy Rider/Dr. Strangelove double bill. You guys should go ahead and see Revanche (it’s really good) while I’m gone.

Adriana

Is anyone going to see/thinking about going to see/interested in going to see Polanski’s The Tenant tomorrow night?

Marko

Here’s the deal, I’m putting it out on the table right now so we can make some decisions:

Option A:
Revanche – Friday (24th), Sunday (26th)

Option B:
Dr.Strangelove/Easy Rider double bill – Friday (31st), Sunday (2nd)

Some of you might be intense enough to go for options A & B, but I’m gonna stick to one of them for now (I have a few final assignments due for school around that time still). I can vouch for “Revanche”…it’s good. I’d watch it again. I also love Dr.Strangelove. I love it a lot. If I had to, I’d run to that film like Isaac Davis did at the end of “Manhattan”.

So, I’m up for either one, and I’m free on any of the days that I listed above. It’s your turn Vancouverites. What say you?

Myra

I’d be up for Revanche, except I made plans to watch another film on the Friday. :( I could do Sunday, but I don’t know if others will be free on a Sunday evening…

Also, Adriana, when are you leaving? I hope I get a chance to see you before you go!

Joshua W

I’m officially broke (oh, being laid off) at the moment and so most of my movie watching is at home. However, I’m gonna end up with a double bill pass for the film noir in August, so I’ll be happy to start attending again with that. I’d be able to go to the Strangelove/Easy Rider but I’m not a huge fan of either of those films and have seen them both a little too often to want to pony up the dough.

Adriana

I leave on the 1st of August, so I’d be more inclined to go to Revanche so that we’re not cutting it to close to what Im sure will be my crazy packing days. I’d like to see you all again before I leave, and I’ll make sure not to bail last minute because of work this time.

Myra, did you go to Tokyo Story last time? I also meant to message you and tell you I’ve just started Berlin Alexanderplatz and wanted to get a chance to talk to you about it.

Myra

Ahhh, you’re leaving so soon! Can you make it on Sunday for Revanche? If you and others can’t, I can reconsider my Friday plans if that seems to work for others. I definitely have to see you before you go! (Plus, I’m sure I can see Jia Zhangke’s Still Life some other time, which was the film I was originally going to watch.)

I did end up going to Tokyo Story and Rules of the Game last weekend, which were both great on the big screen — you were missed! Oh for sure, we definitely have to talk about Berlin Alexanderplatz, although I’m not very insightful when it comes to film analysis, just to let you know. :P How far along are you? You’re embarking on one epic of a masterpiece!

Adriana

@ Myra: I actually can’t make it Sunday, only Friday. But I would feel terrible making you cancel other plans!

How is everyone else for Friday the 24th?

Marko

As of right now, I’m up for Friday the 24th…but I guess I already said that. Anyone else?

As a side note, I have to say that I really feel like I’m behind in film watching recently. Perhaps this is a constant struggle for a cinephile (I don’t know…maybe some of you feel the same way), but I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface (even though I have seen quite a few films over the past few years). With that said, I think it’s time for another cinematic bender. In the month of August, when school is done for me, I’m gonna go full speed. I need some of you to keep me accountable.

Adriana

ha, we really sound like obsessed people sometimes.
I know how you feel, Marko. Im in a bender right now because I leave Vancouver in two weeks and therefore leave my free film source (UBC film library). So even though Im trying to finish up 5 courses and pack up my house, Im also sandwiching in as many films as I can before I go. My biggest mistake was leaving Berlin Alexanderplatz until now… Ive been looking at it all year and just didnt start it for some reason. So now its being packed into my every spare moment.

Adriana

hey guys, are we set on Friday? late show or early show? I vote late, but I can do either.

Jared

I’ll be there Friday. Either show.
