Voice, "Juno", and, Do women hate Diablo Cody as much as men seem to?

I’m curious as to where someone like me fits into all this. -Michael

Actually you don’t, SORRY, you were misunderstood at first(But have you read this thread). You’re contribution to this thread is appreciated(seriously). Oh and, “What exactly is your argument for that film’s worth besides the fact it was written by Diablo Cody?”(Thanks to Liz we can get there now) Thank you again for your contribution to this thread.(BTW, Love those WorSub Dancers, and “Nightmare City”.)

Hmm. -Law

You know something? I think the first person to respond to this thread(in-particular) could really use that advice. (And, he IS. Law, your last post is literally the most thought-out, and intelligent thing I’ve read from you since I’ve joined this site. YOU HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON. I’ll take what he has to say, over what the first person to respond to this thread has to say, any day. Do you have any idea how HARD it is, to NOT begin “arguing vehemently”; when people like the first person to respond to this thread are in the world?)

Now, we can get to the POINT. Remember when this thread opened everybody. I said, “I really want to hear what women think of this woman?” It was described best as…

“vapid sensationalism” -Deckard Croix

I had low standards when I went into “Juno” with a couple of friends -Liz

You hear that guys? That’s the majority of American Film-Goer’s speaking. Next time you go to a Theater(I’m sure it’s been a while for some of you guys), take a look around. You might notice a group of women over here, a group of women over there. That’s who films are geared towards these days. Period. I saw the trailer for Public Enemies and thought, “I’ll wait for the extended cut.” It looked like it was geared towards Liz and her friends(Nothing Wrong with that). Miami Vice was, and I didn’t like the Theatrical version of Vice. I loved the extended cut, on DVD. So I can wait on Public Enemies, because this guy is right. And, Diablo Cody is delivering.

The French New Wave is very popular on this site. It’s also over, just like World War II. You have to respect the past to appreciate the future. You also have to stop, and smell the Roses that are growing today. Has anybody read this Book? I love Godard just as much as the next person, but he’s 78-years-old. He was also older that I am, when he made Breathless. I LOVE French New Wave Cinema. I’ve also got my own American New Wave happening Right Now, and like The Dreamers I don’t have time to waste hating Diablo Cody, or anybody else that’s taking a part in it. I like Fellini’s 8 1/2; I also got my own Fellini, and he wrote Adaptation. Which makes, reading about Diablo Cody like watching a “Sonia Sotomayor” hearing sometime.

I like Sofia Coppola, but she’s no Agnes Varda. Apparently, Miss Varda was the only woman involved with “The French New Wave”( behind the camera) according to Wikipedia. Diablo Cody is as close to Miss Varda as we’re getting. Lucky for her, I don’t want her to be Agnes Varda. I want her to be Diablo Cody. Come on guys, most of you would have never wondered, whether or not, “a baby could all like scratch your vag on the way out.” Without her.

If the film industry is currently geared towards women, and it is. Then I want to hear from the coolest woman. I don’t want to hear some man’s point of view re-cut and geared towards women. Diablo Cody is an evolving force in “The American New Wave.” You know what else “Synecdoche New York” was not playing anywhere near me. “Juno” was, and “Jennifer’s Body” will be. So, if all I’m stuck with is a bunch of movies in theatre’s that are geared towards women. Why not watch Diablo Cody’s, at least I know something good is going to happen. Juno’s breaking up marriages, this is hardcore stuff for a teen-comedy. So what is up with “Jennifer’s Body”?

Now, Let’s all just listen to the Woman below. She seems to gets it!

I get tired of seeing all the hate directed towards her and Juno, even if I feel pretty neutral about both. IMO everyone in the “OMG THIS IS SOO OVERRATEDDD” crowd needs to find some movies that they actually like and shut up about the ones they don’t if they don’t have anything insightful to say. Not that I’m really seeing that in this thread, it’s just a general tendency of online forums that irritates me._ -Liz

First off, thank you for watching my show and giving me feedback BUT you didn’t answer my other question, which is why do you want to see Jennifer’s Body, outside of Cody’s involvement? I realize that if you’re truly a fan of a band, author, filmmaker or actor, you’ll always want to see what they’re up to, even if it initially sounds/ looks bad. So beyond that curiosity, what was it about that trailer that you found appealing? I am curious about this since it looked really bad to me.

If Diablo Cody’s uninteresting, and only semi-funny voice is the future of cinema than its on its last legs.

“Why do you want to see Jennifer’s Body, outside of Cody’s involvement?” -Michael

Well, I’m into the Horror genre. That’s how I knew about the WorSub Dancers. The Jennifer’s Body trailer reminds me of films, like Teeth and Ginger Snaps. Two films that I personally loved, and I want more films like those. Have you seen them?

“If Diablo Cody’s uninteresting, and only semi-funny voice is the future of cinema than its on its last legs.”

LOL! All you did was re-phrase the last sentence of what I said about Irreversible here. Wow, I must have really gotten under your skin with that comment. Sorry, but your entire argument for Irreversible is based on what Roger Ebert has to say. Your entire argument against Diablo Cody (If you could call that an argument?) is based on what I had to say about Irreversible. Dude, you should really look into a mirror, and ask yourself…

Do I have an original thought in my head? -Charlie Kaufman, Adaptation

Michael

Yes, I’ve seen both. I thought Ginger Snaps: Unleashed was a lot better than the first one, though. And Teeth was a surprise. I liked it better than I thought I would.

KOW3

Hopefully, you’ll be surprised by Jennifer’s Body too. I do agree that Ginger Snaps: Unleashed is a better film than Ginger Snaps. Emily Perkins is just a great actress. You know? She was the “punk styled receptionist” at the abortion clinic in Juno.

Actually, no. My argument for Irreversible is based on the merits of the film.In the rare occasions I agree with him I cite him often because he’s actually a very good writer, but it’s hardly the only argument I have for the film. Your argument for Diablo Cody, on the other hand, is to attack and make fun of anyone who doesn’t agree with you. It’s a childish rant, and barely deserves a response.

(As an aside, I didn’t even realize you made an argument against Irreversible when I wrote my posting, there have been many people I’ve debated that film with. I wouldn’t even call what we did a debate, as you never responded to my second posting)

I can’t say I’m a fan of hers:

Jennifer struggles to fight off Needy in the darkness.
Her clawlike fingernails rake Needy’s back and arms.

Needy pulls a BOX CUTTER out of her waistband and flicks
it open like a switchblade. Kshink!

JENNIFER
(gagging)
Do you buy all your murder weapons
at Home Depot? God, you’re butch.

NEEDY
Know what this is for? Cutting
boxes.

She takes a swipe at Jennifer’s CROTCH. Jennifer
instinctively CLUTCHES herself and rears up in defense.
We see Jennifer’s mouth come down on Needy’s neck. Needy
shrieks as if BITTEN, but continues to strangle Jennifer,
straddling her and bearing down.

Two things. First of all, KOW3, why the Dirty Harry link? Second, since Law asked, I will say, that no, teenagers do not talk like they talk in Juno.

deckard croix

Apparently I lived in a very small part of the world where teenagers talked like those in Juno …

People here are acting like the dialogue from the film is some completely bizarre hyperrealistic language form … it’s not, really, you’re actually giving it more credit than it deserves.

Michael

Maybe. It’s always possible I’ll end up liking something I had no interest in initially. My concern in that the trailer was cut by the filmmakers. Now, I like the ideal of filmmakers making their own trailers but it’s a blessing and a curse. If the best bits of your movie don’t look that good, where do you go and how do you sell the film then? Once again, I’d really like to see the trailer Fox cut. It must be epic in how horrible it is.

“It’s a childish rant, and barely deserves a response.”

And what merit does a comment like this hold?

“If Diablo Cody’s uninteresting, and only semi-funny voice is the future of cinema than its on its last legs.”

Why say anything? If that’s all you have to say? My argument for Diablo Cody is based on the credibility of her voice as a writer, and its success in more than one medium. (Some more extreme than others) So, if you’re such a debater, debate. Tell me who’s better, or something? Tell me who the real future of Cinema is? Comments like that are as mediocre as Irreversible. And, IMO deserve the response it got. At least “Heather Victoria” is funny. Besides, for reasons already stated. I felt attacked. Yet, if you really feel “attacked and made fun of” then…

For ridiculing you earlier, I apologize. -Oren Ishii, Kill Bill

“(As an aside, I didn’t even realize you made an argument against Irreversible when I wrote my posting, there have been many people I’ve debated that film with. I wouldn’t even call what we did a debate, as you never responded to my second posting)”

I don’t like Irreversible. I think it’s a mediocre story, that only has merit because Roger Ebert says so. He’s a good writer, but like all writer’s. He’s conflicted.
My argument against Irreversible & Roger Ebert has no place in a thread about Diablo Cody or “Why old films are better than new films.” It’s definitely not proof that great new films are made. If you would be so kind as to enlighten me…
