Besides “The Tin Drum”, which movie would you suggest me?

Coup de Grâce. It streams on Hulu + .

Thank you Aaron, even if living between Italy and the Balkans there is no Hulu+, unfortunately. Thanks for the tip anyway!

I recommend his feature film debut Young Törless (adaption of Musil’s novel) – his TV movie Sudden Wealth of the Poor People of Kombach (maybe my favourite Schlöndorff) – his take on the RAF in The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum and his war drama Coup de Grâce.

“Coup de Grâce” is certainly one of his finest works. As a starting point I would probably recommend his debut “Young Törless” though, a brilliant Musil adaptation that caused some controversies at its time. My personal favorite is “The Sudden Wealth of the Poor People of Kombach” which also has a brief guest appearance by Fassbinder.

EDIT: Nice to see “Sudden Wealth” is also Grey’s favorite. And I second “Katharina Blum”, another seminal Schlöndorff.

I liked Palmetto, too.

I’ll give it a try, it seems “Palmetto” is not that despised so, as Peter was suggesting…

My first Schlondorff was The Ogre and I would recommend seeing it. People forget it or ignore it in favor of his more famous films (see Criterion) but you really can’t go wrong with John Malkovich.

Yeah The Ogre was my first too and I liked it. I hated the Tin Drum though which seems to put me in the minority so you may want to ignore my advice.

I haven’t seen “The Tin Drum” yet Risselada. Why did you hate it? You mean it didn’t deserve the Palme d’Or and the status of Schlöndorff’s best movie?

has he retired?
