VON TRIER'S ANTICHRIST CRITERION COVER CAMPAIGN

Joe Oddity

I’m starting this post to help stir a campaign to get Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist” on Criterion DVD. I think this film is one of the most important and controversal films of the last decade. I also think you can all agree that the only format that this film can work in on is Criterion. Look at the history of this great company when it comes to edgy films(ex: 120 Days of Salo, Repulsion, ect.). So, to gain attention, I’d like to see YOUR ideas for the cover of Antichrist. I was inspired by the recent topic of fake covers, and hope this catches the attention of CC. Thank you everyone, and I can’t wait to see your ideas.

To start, here’s my first cover:

I wish you could see yourself, because I’m sure you look like an idiot.

Great cover! My only suggestion: add a bit of mutilated clitoris down at the bottom. Cheers!

Please, this film is retardedly stupid and gives the misconception of being “important and controversial.” How the hell is this film important to anyone? All it does it out von Trier — yet again — as a giant, raging misogynist. And it’s controversial, how? Because of the scenes of bleeding penises and clitoral decapitations? Give me a break. You want an important and controversial film, give me Irreversible any day.

That’s just my hatred talking.

However, exactly why does this belong on Criterion? There are an innumerable amount of films more deserving than this pile of dung. I know people have a habit of deifying and eating up any shit that von Trier spews, but c’mon. This does not, in any sense of the word, deserve a Criterion treatment. It’s hardly even “edgy.” And don’t even get me started on that stupid fox.

Whatever, this is all pointless.

“give me Irreversible any day.”

Hear, hear!

I agree that it wasn’t really controversial or important but I thought it was astonishingly well made, which is something I can appreciate by itself.

Stagecoach, Antichrist….really…can’t Criterion treat Edward Yang’s films instead of motion pictures that are AVAILABLE EVEN FOR A BLOODY SCHOOL PLAY?

i love Stagecoach, i haven’t seen Antichrist, so i won’t comment on its artistic value but their release in an established company / house like Criterion is, is quite pointless in terms of something….new!

Glemaud

Seriously, where the hell is my Brighter Summer Day??! Now that’s my most anticipated movie.

Zachary Phillip Brailsford

Glem, I know what you mean. More Edward Yang would be something truly special.

Considering most of Yang’s films seem to be in crap conditions, I third Yang for a better transfer. He’s also far more important historically speaking in cinema.

Yeah…so Antichrist…yeah…about that…agreed Glemaud. Agreed.

Dimitris, you’re dead wrong about the importance of “Stagecoach” in the collection. Have you seen the old Warner Bros. disc? It’s atrocious compared to all the other Ford’s they put out with a print that looks like it’s been through a bit of hell. They even refused to use the UCLA remaster that was ready by the time the DVD was getting ready. The Criterion of that is necessary for that alone.

And Glemaud, Antichrist is a pile of shit and Criterion will eventually put out “A Brighter Summer’s Day” as part of Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation.

Do we really need Antichrist to be released by Criterion? The UK Region 2 Blu-ray released a few months back has extraordinary image and sound quality and a host of special features, including a commentary track and several pre-production documentaries.

As for fake Criterion covers, I’ve made a few but I haven’t had the time to upload them yet. I might still do one for Antichrist at some point.

Yes, the cover it’s really nice, but don’t you think it’s spoilering something? I would have preferred more mistery for this powerful movie…

When is Criterion going to release “She’s Just Not That Into You” anyway? I bet that cover will be the mad notes.

Von Trier may be vulgar, disgusting, horrible and pretentious….

But this is a great film.

i’m afraid to see this movie.

which means i will have to, eventually.

NEONBEAR

I don’t think Antichrist is important or contraversial. I still really enjoyed it.

I like Von Trier too. I can see why people would hate his movies though, I guess.

Will C

If Antichrist does become a Criterion, that would be an amazing cover to use.

Amazing job.

von Trier may be a misogynist but that does not necessarily make Antichrist a misogynistic film. It seeks to highlight misogyny by bringing into focus the idea that a woman going crazy and doing all of these horrible things is horrific and unimaginable whereas if the roles were reversed no eye would blink. The idea that women are incapable of matching man’s brutality is inherently misogynistic.

(I am not a fan of von Trier.)

ANTICHRIST was my favorite film of last year. I couldn’t stop thinking about it for days afterwards, and it sort of sent me down a cruelty-in-cinema kick, causing me to rewatch YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS and FUNNY GAMES. The film itself was well-made, and to be honest, terrifying. I thought both characters were dispicable, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away. I don’t purchase a lot of films, because I so rarely rewatch anything, but I can’t wait to get my hands on this. I hope CC picks it up!
