Vonnegut Short Story to be Adapted for Film

Ray

It has recently come to my attention that Kurt Vonnegut’s short story “Harrison Bergeron” is being made into a film (directed by Chandler Tuttle), only the name of the film is “2081” (the year in which the story takes place).

As a fan of both Kurt Vonnegut and dystopia in general, I am very excited to see this movie. Is anyone else anticipating this?

Here is the link to the film’s website: http://www.finallyequal.com/

And here’s a link to the actual short story, if anyone’s interested. I heartily recommend it: http://instruct.westvalley.edu/lafave/hb.html

I expect people will be commenting on this thread soon once the film is out. The 1995 version for television is interesting but I anticipate that the new film will be much better.

Damn! I wanted to make Harrison Bergeron after I read it a few years ago. Very intriguing short story. Now I guess I’ll eventually have to settle with Slaughterhouse…

I think it could be difficult to stretch that one into a full film (perhaps), but maybe not. I just think that the punch the short story gave, especially with the ending, was pitch-perfect, and anything else might completely skew the importance of what was being said. I don’t know.

Vonnegut’s perhaps most famous work Slaughterhouse Five is one of my favorite books I look forward to this film with interest. I’ve only read one of his other works, Breakfast of Champions, which didn’t stick in my mind as much. I don’t think Vonnegut adaptations from the past were on the whole much cop judging solely from critical opinion, but here’s hoping.

He makes modern work’s of fiction look cheap and foolish.

Don’t let that stop you, Zachary, _Bergeron has been filmed before and probably will be again.

I hope this turns out. George Roy Hill’s Slaughterhouse-Five isn’t bad, but Keith Gordon’s Mother Night is the best adaptation of Vonnegut’s work.

I’d like to adapt Long Walk To Forever into a short, and Welcome To The Monkey House a feature. And Tomorrow And Tomorrow And Tomorrow.

It has a great ending. I hope it stays intact.

If I read correctly I’m pretty sure Guillermo del Toro has plans for Slaughterhouse Five.

I recall loving the Jonathan Demme Who Am I This Time? (1982) for American Playhouse.

Hope someone goes ahead with the “Cat’s Cradle” film adaptation. Vonnegut is one of the true masters of science-fiction and a favourite of mine.

I go to west valley college, pretty weird.

I haven’t read this story but I’ll check it out. I got back into Vonnegut over the summer and I’ve loved everything I’ve read from him.

I am.

Wasn’t crazy about Slaughterhouse Five (1972) though.
I’d cry if there was a poor adaptation of Cat’s Cradle.
