Hey, you stole my quandary!
Ahoy-hoy, S. I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Aside:
Captain Blood
The Princess Bride
Pirates of the Carribean
Treasure Island
Not all pirates are evil.
Copycat, copycat. :P
Nonetheless, I’d probably wait to get the War Trilogy until there’s another sale [some people have said there’ll be another this Fall] whereas the Eclipse set is comparatively inexpensive as it stands.
I think I’ll do that. I definitely need to see more Rossellini, I’ll probably pick up the History Trilogy and The Flowers of Saint Francis.
Brady: What have you seen of his so far?
I’m getting Louis XIV from NetFlix as soon as I return my last film.
I’ve only seen Paisan, but I loved it. I want to see Louis XIV, too, but Flowers of Saint Francis seems to have more interesting supplements (that 36 page booklet). I’ll definitely end up getting both eventually.
What have you seen?
Brady: Actually, I haven’t yet, but Europa ’51 is airing on TCM this coming evening [though I fear it will be the dubbed version, most likely.]
Europa ’51… is that tonight or tomorrow? Stromboli is airing, too.
I have to go. Talk to you tomorrow.
Brady: Well, I didn’t want to say ‘tomorrow’ since it was technically ‘today’ when I wrote it. ;) It’s on at 6 PM EST tonight.
When is Stromboli airing?
It aired last night at 1am EST. I’m recording Europa 51, too; why do you think it will be dubbed? Is the no-dub version rare?
Brady: Ah fuck. :\
I don’t think it’s rare, but the fact that a ‘foreign’ film is airing so early on TCM makes me suspicious…….. >_> [They usually only air ’em veeerrrry early on Monday mornings at two or three.]
They’re doing a retrospective on Ingrid Bergman I think; they’re playing Spellbound, Intermezzo:A Love Story, Stromboli, Casablanca, Autumn Sonata…
Brady: Yup, it’s that Summer Under the Stars they do every summer. I don’t know why they wouldn’t air Stromboli and Europa ’51 back to back.
Right, right, right… I forgot about Summer Under the Stars. I think they should have aired Voyage to Italy as well, but then people might think they’re playing only Rossellini..
Brady: It’d be great if they devoted a month to doing non-American filmmaker retrospectives. I’ve always been disappointed in how few of those films are shown [silents as well.]
I agree, I wish there was a channel that only showed art-house/ little-known foreign films… TCM is supposed to fulfill that role, but they seem to want to appeal to people who remember the films they show from when they were younger..
TCM has an extensive film film library focused on “classic” films, not art-house/little-known foreign films. I’d like to see TCM showing more foreign language and silent movies, but really I want them to keep doing what they are doing. No one else is doing it since AMC changed.
Since you just missed the Barnes & Noble sale, I would suggest holding off on Rossellini. Most people think the sale will be repeated in November.
I picked up the War Triliogy and the History Films last month. The only movies I’ve seen by Rossellini are RoGoPaG (don’t remember his segment) and The Flowers of St. Francis (probably my best first time viewing in more than a year).
brady qw
Which is a better deal? I might be coming into some money soon, and I want to know which one is gonna be a better decision. If I get the History Trilogy, I’ll probably get another dvd but does the War Trilogy have enough special features/ better films to justify the $90 price tag?
