No she was not being overly sensitive. Watch the film again. Piccoli, very casually says Bardot should ride in the car with Palance. In doing this he is quite clearly pimping her out. That he doesn’t realize he’s doing this (as revealed in the argument in the unfinished apartment that takes up the bulk of the action) only makes matters worse.
I believe he does say it afterwords at one point, he just refused to come out and say it. I think it’s when they are on the boat. It was very much both of them refusing to bring up the issue, and trying to force the other one to say it, even though they both obviously know what started the argument.
I think there are also allusions to a larger shift in male-female relationships (this was the ’60s, OK) that is also seen in Tout va bien. Not that this is a gender politics film (or is it?)
