love, acceptance, forgiveness. what is the cost of being human? how easy is it to be generous?
But we don’t all want those things at the same time that others may want other things. We may want all three of those things but we’re involved with someone who is only prepared to give two. We may just really want a sandwich when someone else wants love and acceptance.
The cost of being human is the necessity of dealing with the difficulty of expressing ourselves with others and understanding them when they express themselves. There must be constant navigation and mediation of action and expression.
“We may just really want a sandwich when someone else wants love and acceptance.”
Ok, really… who ever wants “just a sandwich”? No one I know. A sandwich and a beer, and love and a blow job. Let’s be honest. Yeah, it’s never a sandwich.
Mike Spence, you are going to get a hernia thinking so hard. Come over here and I’ll give you some " mediation". Is that what we’re calling it now? Lets make it easy, lush, full, ‘fecund’ ,
Even if we really all want love, acceptance, forgiveness, and generosity, I’m not sure that we’re all talking about the same things when we talk about these things.
I think a lot of people want money and power.
I want love, acceptance and generosity, but I also want achievement, comfort and both physical and intellectual pleasure.
Some people are good because they want to be good. Some people are only good because they’re afraid of the consequences of being bad. Some people do evil things because they’re genuinely hateful and sadistic, and others just do so because they’re afraid of the consequences of nonconformity. Others because it’s in their survival interest.
Human motivation is too complex and multifaceted to fit in a fortune cookie.
right now…my list of demands would be in this order: i want a welcome hug, a wet kiss (nothing too randy), another hug but with feeling, then i want to ask someone how their day was, then this person is going to tell me a little bit about their day (hopefully something a little bit interesting) and then i would eat a chicken teriyaki subway sandwich with pickles and banana peppers.
I agree, Jirin, achievement, comfort and pleasure are important and achievable by each of us as individuals and although we, human beings, don’t require any of these as we don’t require love, acceptance, forgiveness, cheeseburgers, pizzas, martinis or generosity to survive, acceptance, forgiveness, hope, these are ideas and sentiments we could actually inspire so easily in one another, give each other, I cannot ‘achieve’ for you but I can accept you, etc., I think through film, music etc we can recognize these in each other, we can empathize, sympathize and in doing so, humanize and participate in each others world. Art and culture may be the way of exposing ourselves and reflecting how alike we are. I’m just sayin’….
On the other hand Human motivation may be so simple. I don’t think peopler do evil because they are genuinely hateful or sadistic. Some of us are broken and damaged and hurt. I think we are fixable. Or maybe I am just afraid that what you said is true. I could not bear that. That would just be too sad and so completely not my experience.
Matt, it would be a great discourse if anyone cared to hear our definitions. It might be the single greatest accomplishment of technology and innovation, the simple comforts in our physical lives and the ability to communicate our ideas immediately, what those definitions are for each of us, why they are different, to all of us who care to listen. Huh?
Matt, it would be amazing if right here, in this little forum, we would gain insight into what those things mean to just us, right here, right now. 10 years ago we would never have thought to reach out and discover how these things might mean something different to just us, give just one other person some insight, or even think one other person might care. But here I am. I am interested in what these ideas mean to you. How you express them.
Where you find expressions of love, acceptance, forgiveness and generosity. How you express these ideas means something to me.
I agree many people are fixable, or at least acceptable if you show them understanding. Sociopaths on the other hand, are most certainly not.
There are some people at work who come off as obnoxious because they have no idea how to express themselves socially. They’re generally nice people, but when they get negative social feedback they feel cornered, get defensive and lash out. It bothers me when people talk about them behind their back. If they were shown more tolerance and acceptance, and were given constructive feedback, they could learn to express themselves better. However, no amount of hugging can convince a serial killer to stop serial killing.
When I mentioned people who do bad things because they’re afraid of the consequences of nonconformity, the movie The Conformist is what first came into my head. People who want to do good things do very bad things because they don’t want to be an outcast.
Films, music, and other forms of art certainly increase our understanding of people and thus increase our empathy and reduce our fear.
Or " High Noon"? “The Assault”(Fons Rademacher?). I don’t know many serial killers. I know so many people who are misunderstood. Ignored. Invisable.

But I wonder if the widening of potentials doesn’t come concurrent with a heightened superficiality?
Scooter be after me own heart. Those simple daily rituals meaningless in the exchange but meaningful in the rite of the exchange.
Meanwhile, I really want to make a feature length movie like Follow My Film achieved.
Simply daily rituals lose a bit of their luster after a decade or so.
i don’t understand you.
i think life would be much nicer if it was less full of sociopaths.
but that’s just me and the buttermilk talkin’.
Seeing this flick in the few days at the Milwaukee Film Festival. In Like2Sleep parlance, I am looking 4ward 2 it :O)
