Bruce Lee (Lee Jun Fan, 李振藩, 李小龍; pinyin: Lǐ Zhènfān, Lǐ Xiăolóng; 27 November 1940 – 20 July 1973) was a Chinese American and Hong Kong actor, martial artist, philosopher, film director, screenwriter, practitioner of Wing Chun and founder of the Jeet Kune Do concept. He is considered by many as the most influential martial artist of the 20th century, and a cultural icon. He was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

He is noted for his roles in five feature length films, Lo Wei’s The Big Boss (1971) and Fist of Fury (1972); Way of the Dragon (1972), directed and written by Bruce Lee; Warner Brothers’ Enter the Dragon (1973), directed by Robert Clouse, and The Game of Death (1978).

I agree. Mr. Lee should have his own Auteurs page. I am grateful for how he has influenced me and I think many more people would benefit from his example if they knew about his films.

Is there a better martial arts film than Enter The Dragon?

Yes! Please add ENTER THE DRAGON to the film listings.

game of death is a better martial arts film
but since that was lee also
obviously he deserves a place on here

Nah – Game of Death the film sucks. The fight sequences that were released as extra scenes on the special edition were brilliant though.

“Is there a better martial arts film than Enter The Dragon?”

Even stepping out of the elitist role for a second, Enter The Dragon is a horrible film. Jim Kelly is the worst actor ever on screen. Worse than that Phantom Menace kid. John Saxon is the star of the movie and every time he opens his mouth I’m thinking “why are they interrupting the Bruce Lee scenes for this fat guy?” The extra’s who are supposed to be highly trained look like they are malnourished and it’s kind of sad to see Lee pummeling them. Han’s plot or scheme or plan is idiotic or nonexistent. It’s also way too long (though this could be fixed by cutting down Saxon and Kelly’s scenes.) Lee is phenomenal but otherwise it’s overrated by critics who were blown away by the star and overlooked it’s shortcomings.

Game of Death, featuring 20 amazing minutes of Lee and over an hour of some chinese guy who looks nothing like him but is supposed to be the same character, is the worst movie ever made bar none and anyone who says different is clearly joking.

Mike – I have to agree with you. Jim Kelly is actually so bad he’s hilarious. John Saxon is obviously no good at kung fu. Obviously the Bruce Lee scenes are what I was referring to when I said that, but coupled with the hilarious badness of the rest of the stuff. The flashbacks are awesomely bad. For me the film is a classic comedy interspersed with phenomenal fight scenes by Lee. I can’t watch it now without thinking of the brilliant Kentucky Fried Movie pastiche, which was bang on.

Bruce Lee’s work is all a guilty pleasure of mine. I don’t own any of it at the moment (used to have most on vhs) but if i ever own ETD again I will have to simply skip around to the chapters that are fun. I forgot about those flashbacks! Wow. ETD is also interesting because it’s the only one with his real voice.

More Game of Death bashing: The worst thing is that, if they were going to release it, it’s unbelievable that they had extra footage of Lee that they didn’t include. Did they think anyone would be fooled with the skinny non-lookalike because he wore sunglasses?

@Den
I didn’t know the kid was still working. I’ve never seen DH. Who’s Miko Hughes?

Actually Mike if you watch Game of Death there’s an absolutely jaw-dropping scene where they stick a cardboard photo of Bruce Lee’s head on to the other actor . You just don’t get that kind of low rent badness in studio flicks these days. Unreal :o)

Yes!!! The cardboard face is so bad it’s almost some kind of genius!!! :)

If a dull hack like Judd Apatow is on Mubi, I don’t understand why a bad ass like Bruce Lee isn’t.

Way of the Dragon (aka Return of the Dragon), directed by Lee himself, is his best film. Stripped of the exploitation overtures of Enter The Dragon, it injects genuine humor and poignant observations of a man in a foreign land while connecting his superhuman physicality with the wit of a philosopher.

Bruce Lee to me has the single most disappointing career ever. Sure, he completed 5 films, but I would hesitate to call any of them great, even within the genre. I feel as if he had lived he might’ve gotten a chance to make a masterpiece, but as it is, he’s just in a handful of solid films. It’s sad.
