I think it started with Napoleon Dynamite. It was one of those movies that polarized things. The Netflix prediction system could not find a way to determine whether a user would like it from previous choices. I didn’t get. It just mystified me. Wes Anderson starts off well with ‘Bottle Rocket’, but then ‘Rushmore’ and ‘The Royal Tennenbaums’ come along, and I want to like them, because I think that I like quirky, but I just hated them. Everything is a false note. Eventually I realized that they had a term for that type of thing. Twee. You can’t even say twee out loud, because even the word sounds dumb.
