I agree it didn’t focus nearly enough on the music itself. It really took a backseat to everything else. I personally loved the heavily Fellini influenced scenes with Kate Blanchett the most, personally. The other sections of the movie were inconsistent, especially the Gere parts for me.
I love Fellini, but I don’t like other people doing Fellini, whether it be Bergman, or Penn, or Haynes; because I think that they end up either too silly or take it too seriously, if that makes any sense- I think that they may imitate the style, but lack the personality of Fellini.
I thought the film would have been much better without the ‘documentary’ bits, and the guy who sits at a table and talks to the camera.
The Gere scenes are a little, bleh. I really only like the Ledger parts, because I think that he went for mimicry less than the other actors, and I think that his scenes tell us more about the personal Dylan, and offer up less sound bites.
To be honest, I don’t even know anymore. Maybe it’s a novella, maybe it’s a screenplay. I guess the short answer is that I haven’t written shit for two weeks now. I have a tendency to get paralyzed by ideas, I really have to get past that.
