I have not seen El Violín, but I’m attending a screening next week, it sounds like an awesome film.
Alejandro Galindo’s “Una familia de tantas” is by far the greatest Mexican film I’ve seen. Other favorites:

I grew up across the street from El cine Azteca in Laredo Texas. As a child I saw a ton of mexican movies, of which Todos son mis hijos is the only title I can remember. But I saw movies with Arturo de Cordova, Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Luis Agular, Piporro, Cantinflas, Resortes, Tin Tan, Maria Felix, LIbetad Lamargue, Sara Garcia. I can recall moments of these movies that can still make me smile and cry. I just can’t remember the names of these movies. el cine mexicano mi dio las semillas para mi amor del cine.

From the 00’s, I suggest El Violín (Francisco Vargas, 2006), and Un mundo raro (Armando Casas, 2001), the second one, a pretty quintaessencial comedy-crime film.
