What can we expect of Werner Herzog`s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

In a Dec 10, 2008 interview, Werner Herzog talked about his latest films Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, and said
“it’s a film I hope will come as a surprise. I’m doing things I haven’t done before…. I did change the screenplay a lot, I invented new scenes, dialogues.”(1)

So, beyond our opinion for the idea of this proyect, ¿what can we really expect about the film?

i can`t imagine anything, so this is a perfect escuse for a forum

hope to catch some trailer soon.

I hope it’s just batshit crazy like Bad Lieutenant is. I really don’t know what to expect, either, but I’m excited. Werner can talk me into anything.

Holy smoke! First time I’ve heard of it, but I hope I live to see it. Imagine a cop film in – pre/post Katrina – one of the most violent cities in the U.S., and directed by Herzog? That’s gonna be something. Charles Bronson will be proud!

This will be comedy gold even if it sucks as it has Nicholas Cage, star of the unintentional comedy classics Con Air and The Wickerman.

Nic Cage is a great actor when he wants to be. I bet Werner gets a good performance out of him.

Rob Frenay

Nic Cage may be a good actor from time to time, but Nic Cage: Action Star rarely is. Still, I trust Werner to at least turn in something interesting.

The good films exhibiting at least some thoughtful narrative filmmaking and sometimes real mastery of the medium: SIGNS OF LIFE, EVEN DWARFS STARTED SMALL, AGUIRRE: DER ZORN GOTTES, EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF AND GOD AGAINST ALL, HEART OF GLASS (yes, even that), STROSZEK, WOYZECK, NOSFERATU, FITZCARRALDO, COBRA VERDE, RESCUE DAWN

The irredeemably clunky titles that…uh…what was he thinking? What happened?: WHERE THE GREEN ANTS DREAM, SCREAM OF STONE, INVINCIBLE

(Not to mention 50 more mostly great, engaging, and challenging documentaries)

So, 11 to 3 in the narrative category that this will be cool. But you never know with The H’og. However, I think he’s genuinely on an upswing, so I hope it’s going to be interesting at the least.

TRAILER:

Yeah, I’ve been waiting for this one for awhile. I’m sceptical even though I love Herzog, because I thought Rescue Dawn was shit and Nicolaus Cage is such a terrible actor (and what’s sad is that he has the potential to be a GREAT actor) that I’m just not expecting anything. The premise sounds great. A retread of Bad Lieutenant in post-Katrina New Orleans? Even though Herzog denies that it’s not based on the original film – I don’t think anyone believes that. But yeah, I’m interested … but not too interested ‘cause I’m wary.

The trailer kind of bummed me out. Cage looks like he’s trying to channel his Leaving Las Vegas days and I’m not sure he’s got it in him anymore. And the harmonica riff thing. I HATE when movies take place in the south and it’s automatically all shitty, glossy-sounding, fresh recordings of random yet completely typical blues riffs. Werner is better than that trailer. Hopefully the movie will be, too, but I’m worried now.

Oooh, man, this is just not looking good. And that generic, lame-ass blues? Please. I hope Nicholas St. John is pleased with what Ed Pressman paid him. Was it worth it, Nicky?

Justin Vicari

Well, Herzog’s good at portraits of obsessive, destructive/self-destructive men. Too bad Kinski can’t be in it.

Holy Smokes! this trailer looks almost as bad as The Road….. my god this horrible trailer editing trend!

Hopefully this film will have some salvageable shreds. I tend to think that Herzog is at his best when not working within anything even remotely resembling a “Hollywood” environment. I wasn’t too big on Rescue Dawn either. Grizzly Man was his last shining moment IMHO of course.

that said… I’ll go spend my hard earned $10 for this. Just to see Nic Cage tinker around / slick back his ridiculous haircut.

and yes the standard polished southern blues riff is loud and clear…. I think the knuckle head who edited this trailer also edited the In the Electric Mist trailer (I worked on that film FYI) and the same stock blues riff is loud and clear. Jesus harolds christ.

I’ve altered my opinion of this. I think this movie is going to be a blast.

Oh God I finally saw the trailer on Adam’s website and I am speechless. The trailer makes this look like some sort of parody. Why would Herzog do this and why would he cast Cage?

I just cannot see Cage as this character and especially not with that hair.

I hope I’m wrong, but this just isn’t looking good to me.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been impressed with one of Herzog’s fiction films.

It is hard to tell because all current trailers are shit. They could take the Rules of the Game and edit it into a shit trailer these days.

Mike Maguire

The trailer seems very much intentionally batshit so I’m gonna wait to hear back from TIFF about what’s REALLY going on here.

Funny what’s being said here about Nic Cage… I agree that he’s unbearable as an action star, a lanky balding middle-ager trying to be intimidating (Face Off? Ghostrider? Seriously?). However, this role seems perfect for him, in my opinion. In fact, it almost seems designed for him: a neurotic, self-important cop trying to be a badass, with comedically inadequate results — just like his attempted performances in the aforementioned action movies. It also seems like a great job for Herzog, who has done some great work with fascinatingly pathetic characters.

Does anyone else see Nic Cage this way? Is my perception of him fatally skewed/unfair?

Video interview with Werner Herzog: BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS

I guess I like Cage a lot more than most here do, even in the action films, where I much prefer him to Travolta-Schwarzennegger-Stallone.

i am a HUGE herzog fan, but this hollywood kick he is on right now is dubious. “Rescue dawn” was very disappointing (but “dieter” is one of my top 5 herzog films) and the trailer for this remake of bad lieutenant just looks weak. Xibit is in the movie. yes, you read that correctly.

Max Hirtz

I think that Werner Herzog will do his own thing until the day he dies, and I don’t think that he sits around on his couch all day wondering if his new films are too closely related to Hollywood. From what I remember, I liked Rescue Dawn a lot, and I don’t mind Nicholas Cage at all. I liked his performances in Bringing Out the Dead and Matchstick Men.

I agree with you, Chris: Little Dieter Needs To Fly is one of my favorite Herzog films as well, and I enjoyed it more than Rescue Dawn.

Now that it’s out.

Funny that there are so many threads anticipating the film, debating Herzog’s intentions in making it, questioning its very existence but now that it’s out, it’s landed with a thud. Fuck, it’s a fun film. It’s the second time farce to the first time tragedy of the original. I like the original but Herzog wisely decides not to take it seriously and play it as a broad farce. None of Ferrara’s agonizing Catholic guilt.

But I swear there are a few scenes where the camera seems impatient by the pointlessness of what’s being filmed. And, yeah, the shots from the reptiles’ point of view are more than baffling. Nic Cage does what he does best (and increasingly infrequent) – he walks the tightrope of overacting but lands just this side of being over the top in an enjoyably campy way. The supporting cast is all quite strong.

The ending is quite brilliant. It inverts the original in a clever way. No punishment, no guilt, no comeuppances. It’s undoubtedly much closer to the sad reality.

The ending is brilliant. The movie is a beautiful mess.

I liked the film a lot. It’s nonsensical, the cators are being good at being bad, there are iguanas and brad dourifs and fairuza balks.
I don’t know when Werner has ever failed in being awesome.
