La Promesse, no question. With these gentlemen you may very much want to watch the films in the order of their making. This film just happens to be a great introduction.
I have not seen any but I have always planned on watching their films chronologically.
Agreed on La Promesse KJ, it happens to be my favorite, but indeed the perfect way to start.
I agree with everyone else: go chronologically. you are in for a treat if you haven’t seen anything by them. utterly amazing… Rosetta especially.
I started with Rosetta, then La Promesse. Great to be thrown in with relentless energy and commitment.
I didn’t care much for La Promesse. It just never grabbed me. It was cold and the filmmaking showed a lack of care and craft like most French movies.
Rosetta is the best place to start.
I started with L’Enfant and it worked. I think Lorna’s Silence might be a good way to start too.
I watched Rosetta first, really liked it, and then was disappointed by every Dardenne film that followed. They stick the camera on the shoulder of every actor so they depend on that actor. I guess they got lucky with Rosetta.
The Son is the best one to start with. I
Hideous Bitch Princess
Any suggestions? I’m interested in getting acquainted with their work but not sure where to start.
